Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived there, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated. "
"Oh, you're such a good man," she said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown "
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said, "I'm on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long. "
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a special building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said," I'm tired. Let's go now. "
We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
"How much do I pay you " she asked.
"Nothing," I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered.
Almost without thinking, I gave her a hug. She held on me and said, "You gave an old woman a little moment of joy. "
24.The old woman chose to ride through the city in order to ____.
A.show she was familiar with the city
B.see some places for the last time
C.let the driver earn more money
D.reach the destination on time
25.The taxi driver did not charge the old women because he ____.
A.wanted to give her a hand
B.shut off the meter by mistake
C.had received her payment in advance
D.was in a hurry to take other passengers
26.What does the underlined phrase "shut off" mean in the passage
A.turn up B.switch on C.switch off D.turn down
27.What can we learn from the story
A.No pains, no gains.
B.People should respect each other.
C.An act of kindness can bring people great joy.
D.People should learn to appreciate other's concern

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional(额外的) learning trials(尝试)increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception(例外) to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.
28.What is the main idea of paragraph 1
A.People remember well what they learned in childhood.
B.Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D.Stories for children are easy to remember.
29.The author explains the law of overlearning by____.
A.presenting research findings B.setting down general rules
C.making a comparison D.using examples
30.According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is____.
A.a result of overlearning
B.a special case of cramming
C.a skill to deal with math problems
D.a basic step towards advanced studies
31.What is the author's opinion on cramming
A.It leads to failure in college exams.
B.It's helpful only in a limited way.
C.It's possible to result in poor memory.
D.It increases students' learning interest.

A recent study suggests that when it comes to the benefits of reading, just doing it matters more than the content. Researchers have found that reading novels helps the brain development in understanding others and imagining the world. They also have found that people who spend a few hours per week reading books live longer than those who don't read.
But how to build a habit of reading Like any habit, the trick is in figuring out what suits you. The hardest part about reading is actually picking up a book. You have to sit down, pick up a book and start reading. "I always have a book next to wherever I put my phone," My friend Jimmy once told me. "So if I want to check my phone, I physically can see the book there. Nine times out of ten. I end up reading the book instead of using my phone for nothing. "
Another challenge is time, and in that case, audio-books (有声书) can be a good choice. Audio-books are great for filling the mind while you're on the way to work, washing dishes or working out at the gym.
If you're still stuck on the way to developing a reading habit, the best way is to revisit your old favorite books to get your youthful reading pleasure. You should free yourself from the opinion that only important or educational books are worth reading. There's no shame in rereading the books that made you fall in love with reading in the first place. Restarting the practice of reading is a little like picking up painting. It takes some work to get into the best state, but once you begin, the results are beautiful and satisfying.
32.What is the most difficult part in forming the reading habit
A.Getting reading skills. B.Finding a great book.
C.Having limited time. D.Getting reading started.
33.What is the advantage of audio-books according to the text
A.They are time saving. B.They provide more pleasure.
C.They help brain development. D.They offer more book choices.
34.Why is rereading old favorite books a good idea
A.It helps restart reading.
B.It is of great convenience.
C.It improves the taste for art.
D.It can increase your patience.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.Methods of killing free time
B.Advantages of using audio-books
C.Ways to choose educational books
D.Advice on developing a reading habit

When Mike was a seven-year-old kid, his parents usually didn't give him money because he liked to buy junk food. They knew such food would be harmful to kids' body.
But one day Mike strongly wished to buy such food. He knew he couldn't persuade his parents to give him money to buy it, so he was upset. At noon that day, his mom was having a nap in the bedroom while his dad was working out of the home. Mike suddenly found his mom's wallet on the sofa in the living room. Usually, his mom would put the wallet close to her — not this time.
Mike found a good chance to get money. He thought he could secretly take some from his mom's wallet without letting her discover it. Then, he slowly walked towards the wallet and opened it. There was lots of money. Mike took a few coins and walked out of the house, going directly to a store in his community.
He bought a bag of food that was very peppery and a bottle of iced Coca-cola. Instead of returning home, he hung around outside to enjoy the food and the drink in case his mom discovered it. When he opened the food bag, a strong, hot and sweet smell rushed into his nose. He tasted some: it was delicious. But it was too hot and his mouth seemed to be on fire. However, he didn't take notice of it. Minutes later, he ate up the bag of junk food and finished the drink. Then he returned home. His mother was still sleeping.
In the afternoon that day, Mike began to feel uncomfortable and wanted to vomit. He felt pain in his stomach. At first, he could stand it. However, finally, he couldn't bear it anymore and told his mom that he felt sick. But Mike didn't tell his mom the truth that he had some hot junk food. Not knowing what was wrong with Mike, his mom was worried.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The Healthy Habits Survey shows that only about one third of American seniors have correct habits. Here are some findings and expert advice.
1. How many times did you brush your teeth yesterday
Finding:A full 33% of seniors brush their teeth only once a day.
Step:Remove the 300 types of bacteria(细菌) in your mouth each morning with a battery-operated toothbrush. Brush gently for 2 minutes, at least twice a day.
2. How many times did you wash your hands or bathe yesterday
Finding: Seniors,on average, bathe fewer than 3 days a week. And nearly 30% wash their hands only 4 times a day—half of the number doctors recommend.
Step: We touch our faces around 3,000 times a day—often inviting germs(病菌) to enter our mouth, nose, and eyes. Use toilet paper to avoid touching the door handle. And,most important, wash your hands often with hot running water and soap for 20 seconds.
3. How often do you think about fighting germs
Finding: Seniors are not fighting germs as well as they should.

【答案】24.B
25.A

I'm on my way to a hospice (临终医院)."我在去临终医院的路上;第十段"For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. "在接下来的两个小时里,我们开车穿过城市。她指给我看她曾经工作过的那幢楼,她曾经住过的那个社区,还有一家家具店,那里曾经是一个舞厅,她小时候曾在那里跳舞。可知,老妇人选择穿过城市以便最后一次看一下一些地方,故选B。
25.考查推理判断。根据最后一段"Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, ‘You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.'"
根据倒数第四段"‘How much do I owe you ' she asked. "我欠你多少钱?"她问;倒数第三段"‘Nothing.' I said. ""不要钱。"我说。可知,作者没有问老妇人要车费,所以是早就关掉了计价器,因此划线短语shut off的意思是"关掉",和switch off意思相近,故选C。
27.考查推理判断。根据第十段"For the next two hours, we drove through the city. "在接下来的两个小时里,我们开车穿过城市;倒数第三段"‘Nothing.' I said.""不要钱。"我说;以及最后一段中的"You gave an old woman a little moment of joy."

C.Having limited time. D.Getting reading started.

After getting some medicine, Mike returned home with his mom. Mike took the medicine, and then he felt better.
Mike realized he should admit what he had done. So he told his mom the truth. Hearing it, his mom didn't seem angry. Instead, she patiently explained to Mike why his behavior was wrong.
