The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a
mobile laboratory named "Drive LAB"in order to understand the challenges faced by older
drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.
Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and
well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated (and inactive.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies
for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.
These include custom-made navigation()tools,night vision systems and intelligent
speed adaptations.Phil Blythe explains:"For many older people, particularly those living alone
or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the
freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others."
"But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often
results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence
in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to."
Dr Amy Guo,the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains,"The Drive LAB is
helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we
might use technology to address these problems.
"For example, most of us would expect older drivers always to go slower than everyone
else but surprisingly,we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed
and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We're looking at
the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.
"We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers
stay safer behind the wheel."
32.What is the purpose of the Drive LAB
A.To explore new means of transport.
B.To design new types of cars.
C.To find out older driver's problems.
D.To teach people traffic rules.
33.Why is driving important for older people according to Phil Blythe
A.It keeps them independent.
B.It helps them save time.
C.It builds up their strength
D.It cures their mental illnesses.
34.What do researchers hope to do for older drivers
A.Improve their driving skills.
B.Develop driver-assist technologies.
C.Provide tips on repairing their cars.
D.Organize regular physical checkups.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.A new Model Electric Car
B.A Solution to Traffic Problem

附听力原文:
(Text 1)
W: Excuse me. Do you know where Mr. Anderson is
M: Oh, we are repairing the classroom ceiling this week, so he is giving his class in the library instead.
(Text 2)
W:Well, this must be the National Library.
M: Oh, no! I don’t think it’s open today. Look, it says “Closed Thursday”.
W: Well, we’ll just have to come back tomorrow.
M: But we are supposed to go on that tour tomorrow. How about the day after tomorrow then
(Text 3)
M: This is the best mango I’ve ever eaten! And the weather is perfect.
W: I know! Doesn’t it seem like everything is better when you’re on vacation
M: You said it! Hey, I want to get a picture of us next to this fruit stand.
(Text 4)
M: Why haven’t you done your homework yet It’s been a whole day.
W: Oh come on, daddy! How can I concentrate with all that noise! The boys have been playing basketball all
day long, just outside my window!
(Text 5)
W: Hey! Do you have a Facebook account I’ve got many friends there and it’s so much fun.
M: I’m happy for you. On the other hand, be careful not to be addicted. It can take up too much of your time.
(Text 6)
M: Wow, it’s nice to see the sun again.
W: Yes, we have been expecting the sun for many days.
M: But it’s said to be cloudy this afternoon. And we’ll probably have some rain again at night.
W: Oh, that’s too bad. The vegetables on my farm do need sunlight. They are getting yellow.
M: I’m sorry to hear that. But we can do nothing but wait.
W: What does the weather report say
M: It just said what I told you just now.
(Text 7)
W: Excuse me. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions
M: No, I guess not.
W: Great! This is for a student union report. We want to find what students think of the campus food service. First,
how often do you eat in the cafeteria
M: Almost every day.
W: What’s your general impression of the food here
M: Well, people complain a lot, but basically I think it’s OK.
W: If I just put down generally satisfactory, is that OK
M: Sure.
W: So you think the other things, like soup and dessert are OK
M: Yeah, that’s about right.
W: Is there anything you’d like to change about the cafeteria
M: Yes, the hours. Sometimes it’s real rush for me to get back here before 6:30.

(Text 8)
W: Hello Yannis, how was your trip back to Greece
M: Hi, Susan. It was fantastic. Everything was as it used to be. I can’t believe it’s been four decades!
W: You came over from Greece when you were 17 and started out working right away.
M: And I worked really hard so that I supported my parents, and put my brother through college.
W: Now look at you! You have a beautiful family here in New York.
M: Yes, but I’m worrying about my kids now. They have everything they want, but they don’t appreciate anything.
W: I understand. Well, just so you know, we Americans cut our kids off when they’re 18.
M: And that’s probably for the best.
W: We’re proud to do so. So why don’t you try
M: I wish I could. But we’re Greek. They’re ours until they’re married.
(Text 9)
M: Oh, there you are!
W: Hi. Did you get the classes you wanted
M: Not really. My physics lectures are eight to nine in the morning Tuesday and Thursday. Those are going to
be killers. I’ll need two alarm clocks. And I got a Friday lab from two to four. I couldn’t get an earlier one
because they conflict with my biology courses.
W: Those Friday classes sure ruin a four-day week.
M: Yeah. You still have time before you register the courses
W: There are still a few minutes left till ten.
M: I’ve heard that there’s real shortage of dorm space this year.
W: How come The student body doesn’t increase, I think.
M: They pulled down Dormitory A to put up a new one---but it won’t be finished until the end of December.
W: Too bad. I wouldn’t want to live outside the campus anyway, though. It’s so cheap and convenient to live
right here.
M: Yeah. But we could share the money for an apartment--- and think of the parties we could throw! You can’t
have a real party in a dorm room.
W: Yeah. That’s very good. Let’s keep our eyes open for a place outside school for next year, then.
(Text 10)
Everybody, attention please. This is your captain speaking. I have something urgent to tell
you. We have to change our direction due to a storm up ahead about fifty miles away. We were hoping to get to
Miami by 7:00 p.m., but the storm started moving faster than we had thought. We just can’t take any chances, so
we’ll have to stop in Havana City and continue on tomorrow morning. There is also a chance that the storm will
move closer to us, and we might experience some strong wind and rain. We know it seems nice and calm now, but
that could change at any minute. For this reason, we need everyone to leave the deck and walk to your rooms at
once. This is for your own safety. Do not run; we don’t want anyone getting hurt. Please don’t worry. We’ve done
this trip from Mexico City hundreds of times, so you’re in good hands. If you need help, please look for our staff
or dial 811 on the phone in your room.
