For three days, the doctor didn’t get single patient. Then on the fourth day, a woman opened the door to his office, saw him and ran away.
“I had to run after her, saying I can help her with the problem,” said Diarra Boubacar. The 53-year-old still has a good laugh when he talks about his first day working as a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) at a private hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan province.
“If my approach is not effective, I will not take any money from you,” he promised the woman. The woman finally accepted his treatment and felt better. “She started bringing her parents and her husband, and they all became my patients.”
Born in the African country of Mali, Boubacar first came to China in 1984 on a student exchange programme majoring in Chinese language and culture at Beijing Language and Culture University. After the course, he studied TCM at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.
Since TCM is also related to Chinese history and culture, students have to study ancient Chinese literature as most of the medical texts were written in ancient Chinese characters. “That’s a subject even the Chinese find difficult; so think of me, a foreigner!” he said.
However, the greatest challenge for him was to convince people that even though he was a foreigner, he could still treat them effectively with TCM.
Besides his work in the community, Boubacar is also known as the “African Norman Bethune”. Doctor Bethune was a Canadian frontline doctor who ran mobile hospital in north China in the 1930s.
“I want to build not only a hospital but also an educational centre where people can come and learn about Chinese medicine,” Boubacar said.
He plans to build a hospital with an educational centre where people can learn TCM in Africa. “If they learn TCM, they will be able to treat people in Africa in a very cheap and effective way.”
4. Why did the woman introduce her family to Boubacar
A. The treatment is free. B. The curative effect is good.
C. It is a private hospital. D. The doctor is from Africa.
5. What was Boubacar’s original intention of coming to China
A. To run an educational centre. B. To start a private hospital.
C. To learn Chinese language and culture. D. To learn from Norman Bethune,
6. What was the big difficulty Boubacar faced at the beginning of his study of TCM

The liver (肝脏) cleans the blood and helps remove poison from the body. But liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world, and now researchers are developing a new form of treatment. They say it reduces the chances of harming the patient.
This treatment involves the use of natural, non-poisonous chemicals from plants. That is why the researchers call it a “green” method for fighting cancer.
Kattesh Katti is a professor of radiology and physics at the University of Missouri’s School of Medicine. For more than 10 years, he has studied the use of nanotechnology (纳米技术) to fight cancer.
Nanotechnology is the science of making things unimaginably small. For this study, Katti used extremely small objects to target and destroy cancer cells in the livers of mice and human cells in the laboratory.
Kattesh Katti used very small particles (颗粒) of gold. The gold was covered in a protective material. He says the particles attract cancer cells. Those cells are far more affected by lower levels of heat than healthy cells.
Once the particles travel to and connect with the cells, they are heated with a laser. That destroys the cancer cells, but the healthy ones around them live.” The patient will be administered with these nano particles. Within a couple of hours, the patient will be treated with lasers, and then the patient can go home. So, there is no radioactivity. There is no harmful waste. There is no bad effect on the patient.”
What that means is that the patient would not have the same side effects that one can have from radiation and chemotherapy (化疗).Chemotherapy drugs often are poisonous. While they kill off the cancer cells, they are also poisonous to the healthy cells and the patient can get very sick.
8. Why is the new form of treatment called a “green” method
A. It avoids the opportunities of hurting the patient.
B. Chemicals used in treatment are natural and harmless.
C. It helps clean the blood and remove poison from the body.
D. Plants are directly used to treat the patient without other medicine.
9. What can we know about Katti according to the text
A. He has been a professor in cancer research for over a decade.
B. He used nanotechnology to make small particles into gold.
C. He used nanotechnology to kill cancer cells in the hospital.
D. He thinks nano particles can treat cancer patients more effectively
10. What’s Katti’s attitude toward the new method of treatment
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Positive. D. Worried.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. Can fighting cancer be green B. Researchers can deal with liver cancer
C. Liver cancer is not a big problem D. Which is better, radiation or chemotherapy
D
Using needles to deliver drugs has been common for more than a century. The past hundred years have seen all manner of medical advances, from life-saving medicine and X-rays to mRNA vaccines and special cancer treatments. Yet the needle has stayed mostly unchanged. Although now available in a variety of different sizes, it remains a hollow (having a hole or empty space inside), pointy tube.
With luck, that may soon change. As Yichi Ma, a scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues outline in a review paper, researchers around the world are looking for ways to ease the pain when needles go into the skin. Many have been inspired by nature.
The team got their idea from mosquitoes, which manage to get their blood meals without causing great pain to people. One reason is that the insects use painkilling chemicals when they first puncture (刺穿) the skin. But there is another reason, The point of a mosquito's saw-like proboscis (锯齿状的喙) is softer at its tip. The insect makes the skin of its target tight before biting, and shakes its proboscis as it pushes the proboscis in. All of this helps reduce the force needed to puncture the skin.
One paper, published in 2020 by a group of researchers in America and China, found that a mosquito-inspired needle required 27% less puncturing force than an ordinary one. And less force means less pain Mosquito-inspired needles might also be useful for delicate procedures such as biopsies (the examination of tissue taken from a living body). A paper from the University of Michigan, also published in 2020, found that scientists could improve biopsies of tissue in some body organs. The lower force led to less movement of the organ itself, ensuring that the needles were guided accurately to the area that needed sampling.
For now, such devices remain limited to labs. But there is a big market for better needles. According to WHO, around 16 billion injections were given in 2018. With one person in four saying they suffer from a fear of needles, the savings on stickers and sweets for the brave souls who roll up their sleeves would be considerable.
12. What can we infer about needles from Paragraph 1
A Their importance has been ignored for long
B. They fall behind other medical innovations.
C Their size remains the same for over a century
D. They had a poor source of supply for decades.
13. What is the aim of scientists' seeking to improve needle design
A. To lessen discomfort.
B. To deliver much more drugs.
C. To make the needles flexible.
D. To increase the frequency of needle use.
14. What is mainly presented in Paragraph 3
A. The source of scientists' inspiration
B. The chemical compounds found in mosquitoes.
C. The unique structure of a mosquito's proboscis.
D. The harmful effects of mosquito bites on humans.
15. Why did the author mention the figures in the last paragraph
A. To show people's anxiety about injections.
B. To highlight the limitations of current needle designs,
C. To draw attention to the dangers of too many injections.
D. To emphasize the potential demand for improved needles.

A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Positive. D. Worried.
11 What’s the best title for the text
A. Can fighting cancer be green B. Researchers can deal with liver cancer
C. Liver cancer is not a big problem D. Which is better, radiation or chemotherapy

With luck that may soon change.
A. Their importance has been ignored for long
B. They fall behind other medical innovations.
C. Their size remains the same for over a century
D. They had a poor source of supply for decades.
13. What is the aim of scientists' seeking to improve needle design
A. To lessen discomfort.
B. To deliver much more drugs.
C. To make the needles flexible.
D. To increase the frequency of needle use.

故填was equipped。

故填a。
故填used。
故填what。
故填had enjoyed/enjoyed。
