Camping is a rite of passage if you grow up in Canada. It’s a child’s first taste of what living in the wild really means. But growing up as an immigrant (移民) from India, I thought it was strange. I simply didn’t understand why so many people loved nature when the comfort of your home still existed.
Then I turned 26 and started trying new things. I had been experiencing mental health issues for quite some time and I discovered being out in nature helped me calm down. So, I decided to try camping.
The night before the trip I was quite excited. Then I overheard a conversation between my father and mother. “Why does she have to do this Doesn’t she know she can just stay at home ” my father asked. “This is what Canadian kids do, it’s okay, she’ll be fine!” my mom explained. My parents had no faith in me surviving one night in the wild.
My friends and I set up our campsite in the woods. As the day went on, we ate, played by the water and met our camping neighbors. Time felt like it slowed down; life felt gentler and easier. Suddenly, I realized: I was doing it! I was camping! As the day turned into night, the stars came out and I was amazed by all the twinkling lights above me.
I won’t lie. I had the worst sleep of my life. Morning came and I was up and ready to make breakfast, coffee and tea. I didn’t even realize I was sad to leave until we started packing everything up.
I wasn’t just leaving, having accomplished something I never thought I would do. I was leaving with a real sense of community, a real sense of appreciation for what the great outdoors had to offer, and a completely different outlook on an activity that I had thought strange for so many years. It made me realize the beauty of Canada wasn’t in the things we did, but in the community we built.
4. What was the author’s attitude toward camping as a child
A She was passionate. B. She considered it beneficial.
C. She felt negative. D. She was frightened.

6. What did the author think of the camping trip
A. It deepened her love of camping. B. It helped her find a sense of belonging.
C. It was peaceful sleeping outdoors. D. It gave her the courage to overcome challenges.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. A new life in Canada. B. The importance of community.
C. A beginner’s guide to camping. D. A meaningful camping experience.

Mars may seem like a dry, desolate place, but the red planet transforms into an otherworldly wonderland in winter, according to a new video shared by NASA.
It’s late winter in Mars’ Northern Hemisphere, where the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter are exploring an ancient river delta (三角洲) that once fed into Jezero Crater billions of years ago.
As the planet’s main feature, dust drives Martian weather, but the planet is no stranger to snow, ice and frost. There are two types of snow on Mars. One is the kind we experience on Earth made of frozen water. The thin Martian air and sub-zero temperatures means that traditional snow changes from a solid directly to a gas, before touching the ground on Mars.
The other type of Martian snow is carbon dioxide based, or dry ice, and it can land on the surface. A few feet of snow tends to fall on Mars in its flat regions near the poles. “Enough falls that you could snowshoe (穿雪鞋走路) across it.” said Sylvain Piqueux, a Mars scientist at NASA’S Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in a statement.
So far, no orbiters(轨道飞行器) or rovers have been able to see snow fall on the red planet because the weather phenomenon only occurs at the poles beneath cloud cover at night. The cameras on the orbiters can’t peer through the clouds, and no robotic explorers have been developed that could survive the freezing temperatures at the poles, which can be as low as minus 120 degrees Celsius.
However, the Mars Climate Sounder instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter can detect light that’s invisible to the human eye. It has made detections of carbon dioxide snow falling at the Martian poles. The Phoenix lander, which arrived on Mars in 2008, also used one of its laser instruments to detect water-ice snow from its spot about 1,600 kilometers away from the Martian north pole.
Thanks to photographers, we know snowflakes on Earth are unique and six sided. Beneath a microscope, Martian snowflakes would likely look a little different. “Because carbon dioxide ice has a symmetry (对称) of four, we know dry-ice snowflakes would be cube-shaped (立方体的), ” Piqueux said. “Thanks to the Mars Climate Sounder, we can tell these snowflakes would be smaller than the width of a human hair.”
Ice and carbon dioxide-based frosts also form on Mars, and they can occur farther away from the poles. The Odyssey orbiter (which entered Mars orbit in 2001) has watched frost forming and turning to a gas in the sunlight, while the Viking landers spotted icy frost on Mars when they arrived in the 1970s.
8. What can we learn about the snow made of frozen water on Mars
A. It contains lots of dust. B. It makes the Martian air thick.
C. It keeps its form stable while falling. D. It can hardly be seen on the Martian ground.
9. What makes it difficult for robotic explorers to see snow fall on Mars
A. The freezing temperature. B. The thickness of clouds.
C. The changing weather pattern. D. The distance from the poles.
10. What can the Mars Climate Sounder tell us about dry-ice snowflakes
A. Their smell. B. Their size. C. Their speed. D. Their direction.
11. What is the best title of the text
A. It Seldom Snows on Mars B. It Is Much Colder on Mars
C. The Beautiful Winter on Mars D. The Seasonal Changes on Mars
D
Having bright colors and greenery in our cities can make people happier and calmer, according to a recent experiment.
Researchers at the University of Lille tested how volunteers reacted to variations of a minimalist concrete (混凝土), glass and metal urban landscape. The participants walked on the spot in a laboratory wearing a VR headset with eye trackers, and researchers adjusted their surroundings, adding combinations of vegetation, as well as bright yellow and pink colors, and contrasting patterns on the path. By tracking their blink rate, the researchers learned about what the volunteers were most interested in.
Researchers found the volunteers walked more slowly and their heart rate increased when they saw green vegetation in their urban setting. They also kept their heads higher, looking forward and around, instead of toward the ground. While adding and taking away color didn’t make quite as much of a difference for the participants, they were more curious and alert when colorful patterns were added to the ground they were virtually stepping on. According to Yvonne Delevoye-Turrell, a professor of cognitive psychology at the university and the lead author of this study, the results demonstrated that the urban experience had been made more pleasurable.
The research, published in Frontiers in Virtual Reality, suggests that making some small changes to the city could boost morale, even when people are experiencing them through virtual reality. “We think that the variations in human behavior obtained in virtual reality can predict the changes that would be obtained in the natural settings,” said Delevoye-Turrell.
Michal Matlon, an architecture psychologist and consultant, said: “I think that though most people appreciate nature in cities — they find it beautiful, and they usually react with anger when it’s taken away — they don’t fully understand how beneficial spending time in nature is.”
“We often underappreciate the compounding effects that enriching ordinary places with nature can have.” Matlon said even the smallest of changes could affect the experience of someone on their way to work, for example.
12. What did researchers try to find in their experiment
A. What landscape interests urban people most.
B. What helps people adjust to new surroundings.
C. The effects of vegetation and color in urban settings.
D. The most appealing colors and patterns for urban paths.
13. What happened when the participants were shown green vegetation
A. Their hearts beat faster. B. They increased their walking speed.
C. They focused on the ground. D. They became nervous and alert.
14. What does the underlined word “morale” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Health. B. Imagination. C. Spirits. D. Abilities.
15. What would Michal Matlon probably think is beneficial
A. Enriching our lives with colors. B. Combining nature into our daily lives.
C. Making regular, small changes in our lives. D. Spending as little time as possible in nature.

Fact is that robot-callers are never going to stop trying to reach you. Their schemes bring in hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of dollars annually. And unfortunately, older people are more likely to fall prey to these scams. ____17____
Sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry
Your first move: Join the Federal Trade Commission’s National Do Not Call Registry. You can get on the list by calling 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number you want to register. ____18____ To date, the agency has taken 51 legal actions against companies and telemarketers, recovering $112 million.
Use spam-filtering apps and tech
____19____ A spam-filtering app can give you a second layer of protection and is a good add-on to your overall smartphone security. The app’s makers maintain a large database of user-reported robocalls. When one of those numbers dials you, the app blocks the phone from ringing and informs you the call is spam. Genius!
____20____
You probably know that a caller who insists you owe money to the IRS or says you’ll be arrested if you don’t settle a debt is a scammer. But your 10-year-old kid and your older parents and grandparents may be tricked. And remember: Knowing how to stop spam calls is just one step toward avoiding scams; don’t forget to explain how to stop spam texts to your loved ones, too.
A. Warn family members
B. Report to the police at once
C. Follow these steps to pull the plug on them once and for all.
D. If you have multiple numbers to input, register them at DoNotCall. gov.
E. Spam calls can reach you anytime and anywhere when you use your smartphone.
F. They’re annoying, but that’s not the only reason you should know how to stop spam calls.

Last April, Jake drove to visit his mother who lived in the countryside. When he went back home, Jake’s mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son’s safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival.
With his mother’s words in mind, Jake approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Jake began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a rough mountain road that had been flooded by a creek (小溪). Jake, driving a four-wheel truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn’t realize that such a thought would be a big mistake.
It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Jake’s problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver’s side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Jake was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.
On the road right behind Jake were a delivery worker named Paul and his friend Tom, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Jake’s truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Paul quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.

A. She was passionate. B. She considered it beneficial.

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. C

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. B

How to Stop Spam Calls for Good
If you made a list of the little things that bothered you the most, phone call scams would no doubt be at the top. Telemarketers, or more often, automated robot-callers, have tricks for interrupting you at the worst possible moment. ____16____
G. The National Do Not Call Registry will prevent a lot of unwanted calls, but it won’t stop all of them.

He didn’t give up easily; instead, he balanced himself, leaned back and threw the rock at the window again with all his strength. Fortunately, this time he made it — the glass broke. To his relief, it didn’t hurt Jake, who reached out for Paul’s hand and was rescued. Without delay, the two men escaped and returned to safety.
Jake was about to thank Paul and Tom when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang. With trembling hands, Jake took out the phone and answered it. “Are you home yet Everything’s good ” His mother’s anxious voice came over. Tears welled up in his eyes on hearing the familiar voice of concern. Jake choked up as he explained what had happened. Hanging up the phone, he thanked Paul and Tom sincerely. Cold as the rain was, great warmth filled his heart like never before.
