I waited 14 years to do something that I should have done in my first year of teaching: shadow a student for a day.
This is the first year I am working in a school but not teaching my own classes. Being the High School Learning Coach, my job is to work with teachers and administrators to improve students’ learning outcomes.
As part of getting my feet wet, the headmaster suggested I “be” a student for a day: I was to complete all the work of a 10th-grade student: if there were notes on the board, I copied them as fast as I could into my notebook; if there was an experiment, I did it with my host student; if there was a test, I took it.
I could not believe how dog-tired I was after the day, because I literally sat down the whole day, except for walking to and from classes. We forget as teachers, because we are on our feet a lot — in front of the board, walking as we speak, circling around the room to check on student work…. we move a lot.
But students almost never move, because in every class, the expectation was for us to come in, take our seats, and sit down for the whole class. Therefore, by the end of the day I was eager to move. I had planned to go back to my office and write down some notes on the day, but I was so exhausted that I couldn’t do anything but watch TV and I was in bed by 8:30.
If I could go back and change my classes now, I would immediately change the following three things:
1. mandatory stretch halfway through the class;
2. put a basketball hoop on the back of my door and encourage kids to play in the first and final minutes of class;
3. build a hands-on, move-around activity into every single class day.
4. Why did the headmaster suggest the author do the task
A. To help the author with her new job. B. To allow the author to realize her dream.
C. To let the author learn from other teachers. D. To test whether the author was a good coach.
5. What was the author supposed to do in class
A. Instruct the students how to take notes. B. Find out what subject the students liked.
C. Do what the students were required to do. D. Teach students to do chemical experiments.
6. How did the author feel after the day
A. She lost interest in TV. B. She had pity for students.
C. She felt unsatisfied with the school. D. She thought teachers move too much.
7. What do the three changes have in common
A. They are after-class activities. B. They encourage students to love sports.
C. They prevent students from sitting too long. D. They are good for both teachers and students.
A 5. C 6. B 7. C
根据第二段“Being the High School Learning Coach, my job is to work with teachers and administrators to improve students’ learning outcomes. (作为一名高中学习教练,我的工作是与老师和管理人员合作,提高学生的学习成果)”以及第三段“As part of getting my feet wet, the headmaster suggested I “be” a student for a day: I was to complete all the work of a 10th-grade student: if there were notes on the board, I copied them as fast as I could into my notebook; if there was an experiment, I did it with my host student; if there was a test, I took it.(为了让我尽快适应,校长建议我“当”一天学生。我必须完成十年级学生的所有工作:如果黑板上有笔记,我就以最快的速度抄到笔记本上;如果有实验,我就和我的寄宿生一起做;如果有考试,我就要参加)”可知,校长建议作者做这个任务,是为了帮助作者完成她的新工作。故选A。
根据第三段中“I was to complete all the work of a 10th-grade student: if there were notes on the board, I copied them as fast as I could into my notebook; if there was an experiment, I did it with my host student; if there was a test, I took it.(我必须完成十年级学生的所有工作:如果黑板上有笔记,我就以最快的速度抄到笔记本上;如果有实验,我就和我的寄宿生一起做;如果有考试,我就要参加)”可知,作者在课堂上应该做学生被要求做的事。
根据第四段“I could not believe how dog-tired I was after the day, because I literally sat down the whole day, except for walking to and from classes. We forget as teachers, because we are on our feet a lot — in front of the board, walking as we speak, circling around the room to check on student work…. we move a lot.(我简直不敢相信一天之后我是如此疲惫,因为我真的坐了一整天,除了走路上下课。作为老师,我们常常会忘记,因为我们经常站着——在黑板前,一边说话一边走路,在教室里转圈查看学生的作业……我们经常走动)”可推知,一天之后作者感觉同情学生。故选B。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“But students almost never move, because in every class, the expectation was for us to come in, take our seats, and sit down for the whole class.(但学生们几乎从不动,因为在每节课上,他们期望都是等着我们进来,坐好,然后坐满整个班级)”以及最后三段“1. mandatory stretch halfway through the class; 2. put a basketball hoop on the back of my door and encourage kids to play in the first and final minutes of class; 3. build a hands-on, move-around activity into every single class day.(1. 上课中途必须做伸展运动;2. 在我的门后挂一个篮球筐,鼓励孩子们在第一节课和最后一节课上打球;3.在每个上课的日子里都建立一个动手的活动)”可知,这三个变化的共同点是都是为了防止学生坐太久。故选C。

My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally — but would never run very well. The first three years of his life, he had several operations on the feet. By the time he was eight, you wouldn’t know he had a problem when you saw him walk .
The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. We never told him that he probably wouldn’t be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn’t know.
In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others — perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to so many others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn’t tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn’t know.
He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day — even the day he had a 103-degree fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. I found him running all alone. I asked him how he felt. “Okay,” he said. He had two more miles to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn’t run four miles with a 103-degree fever. So he didn’t know.
Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list.
Joey had made the team. He was in seventh grade — the other six team members were all eighth-graders. We never told him he shouldn’t expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn’t do it. We never told him he couldn’t do it...so he didn’t know. He just did it.
8. What does the underlined word in Para.1 mean
A. A game. B. A disability. C. A stick. D. An association.
9. Why didn’t the parents tell Joey the truth
A. Because they forgot to tell him the truth. B. Because they liked cheating him.
C. Because they didn’t want to hurt him. D. Because he didn’t want to know.
10. What is the best word to describe Joey
A. Lazy. B. Intelligent. C. Determined. D. Dependent.
11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. The Great Parents B. The Road to Success
C. The Club Feet D. He Didn’t Know
B 9. C 10. C 11. D

根据第一段画线词后文“The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally — but would never run very well.(医生向我们保证,经过治疗,他将能够正常走路,但永远不会跑得很好)”可知,后文提到他永远不会跑得很好,说明儿子的脚有残疾。
根据第二段“The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. We never told him that he probably wouldn’t be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn’t know.(我们邻居家的孩子们在玩耍时就像大多数孩子一样跑来跑去,乔伊也会跳进来,跑着玩着。我们从来没有告诉他,他可能不能像其他孩子一样跑得好。所以他不知道)”可知,父母不告诉乔伊真相是因为他们不想伤害他。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others.(每天他都和球队一起训练。他比其他人训练更努力,跑得也更多)”和第四段“He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day—even the day he had a 39 degree fever.(他坚持每天跑4到5英里,即使是在他发烧39度的时候也不例外)”可推断,Joey训练比别人都刻苦,就算是发烧了也不停止训练,从而推断出他是一个意志坚强的人,故选C。
根据最后一段中“We never told him he shouldn’t expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn’t do it. We never told him he couldn’t do it...so he didn’t know. He just did it.(我们从没告诉过他别指望能进球队。我们从没说过他做不到。我们从来没有告诉他他做不到。所以他不知道。他就这么做了)”结合文章主要讲的是作者在教育先天缺陷的儿子时,因为没有给他设置限制,使其在追逐梦想的时候无所顾忌,从而成功获得进入学校体育队的资格。可知,D选项“他不知道”最符合文章标题。故选D。
D
Physical education, or gym class, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education The answer is certainly “yes”.
Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity (肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger.
The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activity and help teens have healthy weights.
Inactivity increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.
12. According to Paragraph 2, what does physical education in high school mean
A. Helping teens learn to make good plans.
B. Removing the stress faced by teens at school.
C. Getting teens to encourage adults to exercise.
D. Making teens attach importance to exercise later.
13. What does the underlined word “hindered” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Measured. B. Shown. C. Prevented. D. Caused.
14. According to the PCFSN, what does doing sports mean
A. Helping students do better in their studies.
B. Helping students make good use of all their time.
C. Helping students adjust to their studies better.
D. Making students choose between sports and studies.
15 What is the text mainly about
A. How high school students can live a better life.
B. Why high school students should receive physical education.
C. Why some schools consider physical education important.
D. How schools can help students love doing sports.
D 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据文章第六段“An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions”(积极的生活方式是避免这些健康问题的好方法。
由最后一段中的“According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance.”(根据总统健身、运动和营养委员会(PCFSN)的说法,每周进行5小时体育锻炼的学生的学业成绩有所提高。) 故选A项。
根据文章第一段“Physical education, or gym class, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education The answer is certainly “yes”.”(不是所有的高中生都要上体育课。

Believe it or not, the three years go by really fast. Having a plan in place will help you make the most of your high school experience.(虽然没有必要为未来三年的每一天做计划,但把你想参加的课程或想尝试的活动记下来也无妨。

1. mandatory stretch halfway through the class;
2. put a basketball hoop on the back of my door and encourage kids to play in the first and final minutes of class;
3. build a hands-on, move-around activity into every single class day.
