Carol-Anne O’Callaghan, a former teacher from Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, has fought hard to protect ancient oaks near her home, which she says are home to rare bats.
In February 2021, O’Callaghan was walking her dogs when she spotted yellow dots stuck on some of the 99 oak trees in a narrow country lane close to her home. The dots indicated trees marked for destruction. After she learned the trees would be felled as part of the HS2 high-speed railway works, she called the HS2 helpline and was told there was nothing that could be done as an over-road would be built. She gets choked up remembering the moment she realized many of them were to be cut down.
O’Callaghan loves that ancient line of oaks. They were planted in the 19th century. “My family and I would picnic under them,” she says, “climb them, have rope swings on them. The trees are amazing and beautiful and meant so much.” One of the last photos of her mother, taken shortly before she died, was of her sitting in a swing in their branches.
She noticed that on the other side of the lane, to the north, there were no ancient oaks. So she began campaigning to save the trees. With the help of her daughter, Blaize, she started a petition(请愿书), which went on to get nearly 43,000 signatures. “I saw someone passionate about giving a voice to those who don’t have one, someone not afraid of asking questions and calling out large, daunting businesses for doing the wrong thing,” says her neighbour Victoria.
Buckinghamshire Council has got involved, and the felling is paused. A final decision has yet to be made about the proposed over-road. “We’re optimistic that they’ll hear our argument and take the ecology of the lane into account,” says O’Callaghan. “We want them to put in a green crossing in the gaps between trees, for the bats, and we’d like the place to become a conservation area. For the trees and the bats—this is what we are fighting for!”
4. What did the yellow dots on the oaks indicate
A. These oaks would be cut down. B. The narrow lane would be widened.
C. Rare bats would get protected. D. A railway station would be built.
5. Why does O’Callaghan have deep feelings of the oaks
A. Due to the oaks’ long history. B. Due to the natural beauty.
C. Due to the precious memories. D. Due to the diverse wildlife.
6. What kind of person is O’Callaghan
A. Creative. B. Humorous. C. Generous. D. Enthusiastic.
7. What is a direct result of O’Callaghan’s efforts
A. The ecology is being improved.
B. The felling has been put off.
C. The Council canceled the proposal.
D. The area becomes a reserve.
A 5. C 6. D 7. B

故选A。
根据第三段中的“‘My family and I would picnic under them,’ she says, ‘climb them, have rope swings on them. The trees are amazing and beautiful and meant so much.’ One of the last photos of her mother, taken shortly before she died, was of her sitting in a swing in their branches.(‘我和家人会在树下野餐,’她说,‘爬上树,在树上荡绳子绑的秋千。这些树令人惊叹、美丽,意义重大。’她母亲去世前不久最后拍摄的照片中有一张就是她坐在树枝上的秋千上。)”可知,O’Callaghan一家人在树下野餐、在树上攀爬、荡秋千,而且她有一张照片就是她母亲去世前坐在秋千上拍摄的。由此可推测出,O’Callaghan有许多与橡树的珍贵回忆,所以她对这些橡树有深刻的感情。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中邻居Victoria的话“I saw someone passionate about giving a voice to those who don’t have one, someone not afraid of asking questions and calling out large, daunting businesses for doing the wrong thing(我看到有人热衷于为那些无法发声的东西发声,不怕问问题,也不怕指责那些做错事的大型、令人生畏的企业)”可知,邻居认为O’Callaghan敢于发声、敢于质疑和指责有错误的大企业,由此可推测出,她是一个充满热情的人。
根据最后一段中的“Buckinghamshire Council has got involved, and the felling is paused.(白金汉郡议会已经介入,砍伐行动暂停。)”
C
Vehicles on our roads are now mostly petrol and diesel (柴油) cars, but their days cannot continue for much longer. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 percent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 percent by 2024.
One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety” — drivers’ concerns about running out of electricity on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.
Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed greatly over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their high prices drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars are starting to persuade picky consumers.
As well as development on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes.
Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions (排放). If the US could replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 percent. That said, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.
8. What does the underlined word “hurdle” in Paragraph 2 probably means
A. Aim. B. Problem. C. Result. D. Step.
9. Why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars in the past
A. They were dependable. B. They were not widely promoted.
C. They were expensive. D. They couldn’t travel at a high speed.
10. What is the function of Paragraph 4
A. To introduce the history of electric travel.
B. To explain why the world needs more electric cars.
C. To show why more people have interest in electric cars.
D. To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.
11. Which is the best title for this passage
A. Driving into a Cleaner Future B. History of Electric Cars
C. Problems with Petrol and Diesel Cars D. Best Means of Transportation
B 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据划线词所在句“One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety”—drivers’ concerns about running out of juice on a journey. (电动汽车被广泛采用的一个hurdle是“里程焦虑”——驾驶者担心在旅途中电量耗尽)”可知,“驾驶员担心在旅途中耗尽电能”是电动汽车的缺点,这是电动汽车普及的一个“问题”。由此可知,hurdle与problem意思一致。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Not that long ago, electric cars met with distrust, and their high prices drove customers away. (不久前,电动汽车遭遇了不信任,高昂的价格让消费者望而却步)”可知,过去很多人拒绝购买电动汽车是因为人们认为电动车太贵了不值得买。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“As well as development on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies.
根据第一段中的“Vehicles on our roads are now mostly petrol and diesel(柴油)cars, but their days cannot continue for much longer. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 percent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 percent by 2020. (汽油和柴油车可能仍然主宰着我们的道路,但它们的日子屈指可数了。一项最近的大学研究发现,目前美国87%的日常汽车出行可以使用电动汽车。到2020年,这一数字可能上升到98%。)”和第四段中的“As well as development on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies.(除了在公路上的发展,电动汽车正在走向海洋和天空。)” 故选A。
D
5G has the potential to disrupt a huge number of industries, including one of the world’s oldest: Farming. Next-generation 5G networks can be 100 times faster than 4G, making communication between devices and servers much quicker. 5G can also carry much more data than other networks. That makes the technology ideal for transmitting information from remote sensors and drones, key tools that are being tested by farmers. 5G is also helping to automate farming processes.
UK initiative 5G RuralFirst launched a smartphone app in March called Me+Moo, which lets farmers track a “connected” cow and receive daily updates on the animal’s health and behavior. The system, which is being tested on cows at the Agri-Epi Center in Somerset, England, is funded in part by UK government and supported by the tech company Cisco (CSCO). The cows wear 5G-connected collars that send data to the app on everything from what they’re eating to how they’re sleeping. Farmers can see the information instantly. “This provides peace of mind that the cows are happy, healthy and behaving normally, as well as early warning if they are getting sick, are pregnant or need to be checked,” said project manager Duncan Forbes.
Yet to make a difference, 5G will first need to be installed in rural areas. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts that in order to provide for the world’s rapidly rising population, the planet will need to grow 70% more food in 2050 than it did in 2009. “To respond to those demands, farmers will need new technologies to produce more from less land, with fewer hands,” reads one report from the organization.
In 2017, another 5G RuralFirst project became the first in the world to successfully plant, tend and harvest a crop without a single human stepping foot in the field. Autonomous Automatic tractors sowed the seeds, drones with sensors monitored the crops, and smaller machines took samples from fields to assess what fertilizers and pesticides to apply.
12. Why can 5G help the farming
A. Because it can carry more information.
B. Because it can be equipped with sensors.
C. Because it can disrupt a lot of industries.
D. Because it can be installed in rural areas.
13. What did farmers do firstly if they wanted to use Me+Moo
A. They founded a tech company.
B. They let the cows wear 5G-connected collars.
C. They kept cows behaving normally.
D. They made sure the cows were checked often.
14. According to FAO, how will the world solve the food problem
A. People should control the rising population.
B. People should find more and more land.
C. People should turn to the new technology.
D. People should learn to get more money.
15. How did RuralFirst decide what kind of fertilizer to apply
A. It analyzed the soil.
B. It dug earth with tractors.
C. It employed experts.
D. It hired drones with sensors.
A 13. B 14. C 15. A

根据第一段“5G can also carry much more data than other networks. That makes the technology ideal for transmitting information from remote sensors and drones, key tools that are being tested by farmers. 5G is also helping to automate farming processes.” 故选A。
根据第二段“UK initiative 5G RuralFirst launched a smartphone app in March called Me+Moo, which lets farmers track a "connected" cow and receive daily updates on the animal's health and behavior. The system, which is being tested on cows at the Agri﹣Epi Center in Somerset, England, is funded in part by UK government and supported by the tech company Cisco (CSCO). The cows wear 5G﹣connected collars that send data to the app on everything from what they're eating to how they're sleeping.”
根据倒数第二段“The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts that in order to provide for the world's rapidly rising population, the planet will need to grow 70% more food in 2050 than it did in 2009. "To respond to those demands, farmers will need new technologies to produce more from less land, with fewer hands," reads one report from the organization.”
根据最后一段“In 2017, another 5G RuralFirst project became the first in the world to successfully plant, tend and harvest a crop without a single human stepping foot in the field. Autonomous Automatic tractors sowed the seeds, drones with sensors monitored the crops, and smaller machines took samples from fields to assess what fertilizers and pesticides to apply.” 故选A。

A majority of the people do not read the classics. Their reasons begin with the language being too difficult and end with the storyline to distant to the present context. Love for classics is obviously not at first sight. ___16___ We begin as acquaintances (泛泛之交) and eventually become close friends with private jokes between us. So how does one approach a classic
Don’t be afraid to be confused.
We get it: it’s hard to power through confusion. It doesn’t feel great when a book makes you feel confused. Every reader has to start somewhere. ___17___ Instead, be proud of yourself for trying, and get excited about all the new things you’ll learn.
Research, research, research.
___18___ Researching the author-and the time and place they were writing about-can help you situate yourself during tricky passages. The author’s experience, viewpoint, and historical context might help you make the connections you might not have otherwise.
Just pick the book up.
This step is self-explanatory. While it’s not hard to just pick a book up, we know how difficult it can be to convince yourself to do so. ___19___ Take a deep breath, then leap onto the deck (甲板) of Melville’s Pequod or step cautiously through the gates of Castle Dracula.
Remember: there is no right answer.
There is no perfect way to read a classic text. There is no defining interpretation, no singular, exact answer. Your goal as a reader is to discover what aspects and insights are meaningful to you. Enjoy the process. ___20___ Even if your interpretation of the work isn’t quite perfect, it is still valuable!
A. It is a gradual affair.
B. Allow the book to grow with you.
C. It has some form of historical influence.
D. Before you turn to page one, do some digging.

“I’ve sent my resume(简历), but I haven’t received any emails or heard anything. So, I came here,” Sandra said to Mrs. Cleaver, the manager of the grocery store where she applied to work during her summer holidays.
Sandra was raised by a single mother who worked very hard but still didn’t have much to save for the 18-year-old’s future. So Sandra decided to send out resumes and work as much as possible. Usually, her mother would not allow her to work during the school year because she wanted Sandra to focus on her study. But Sandra insisted and applied at several places. However, this grocery store was the best option. It was close to her house, and her mother wouldn’t worry about her much if she was there.
“I’m sorry, child. We’re just not hiring right now,” Mrs. Cleaver said.
“Please, I’ll do everything. I can work part-time or full-time, and I can do anything that others don’t want to do. I’m also pretty strong, though I look skinny,” Sandra explained eagerly. Mrs. Cleaver gave her a knowing smile. Sandra explained that she wanted to save money for medical school, and Mrs. Cleaver finally nodded.
“Can you start working today ” Mrs. Cleaver asked. Sandra almost hurt her neck while nodding fiercely. She was excited. Mrs. Cleaver took her in the back and gave her a vest and a broom. Her first assignment was to sweep the dirt and leaves. Sandra did it without complaint. Mrs. Cleaver then assigned her to clean the bathrooms, which was a rougher request. But Sandra didn’t complain and kept her word. Eventually, Sandra started getting all the dirty and heavy tasks other employees hated. She did everything gladly for everyone, no matter how difficult and tiring the task was. Mrs. Cleaver liked her attitude and took note of it. In a world where young people of her age wanted to become Internet stars, it was nice to see someone enjoy honest hard work.

Paragraph 1:
Mrs. Cleaver spoke to the store owner Ronald about Sandra. Deeply touched by Sandra’s enormous capacity for hard work, Ronald decided to offer this diligent girl an opportunity to apply for his Education Foundation. “Your story reminds me of the days when I was young, doing the tough work and striving for my dream. And I really hope I can do something to make your dream come true,” said Ronald genuinely. “That is so nice of you to give me such a great chance,” Sandra thanked Ronald with her hands trembling, tears brimming in her eyes.
Paragraph 2:
Learning that Ronald allowed her to apply for a scholarship, Sandra couldn’t believe her ears. She dashed to Mrs. Cleaver to confirm whether it was a dream. “No. It’s a dream coming true,” beamed Mrs. Cleaver, casting her an encouraging look. Finally, luck befell this ill-fated but optimistic girl. After a few weeks, she was provided with a full scholarship for her medical school. After the despairing darkness finally came broad daylight. Odds might not be in our favor sometimes, but as long as we hold on with resilience, misfortune can be a blessing in disguise.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
