We humans have always been obsessed with reaching higher, building taller, and touching the sky. In effect, we have been building towers and buildings each taller than the other. Today, we will look at four of the tallest buildings in the world.
Burj Khalifa
Since it opened on January 4, 2010, the Burj Khalifa has been the tallest building in the world. The United Arab Emirates broke world records in the 21st century for building a needle-like, 162 story skyscraper in Dubai. A public observation deck called “At the Top” is located on the 124th floor. The top floor is home to a private VIP club, closed to anyone except members.
Taipei 101
Featured in many videos, the tallest building in Taipei, China, is famous for its unique shape and awesome fireworks display every year. It houses lots of hotels, offices, apartments, and an observatory deck. There’s an outdoor round observatory square on the 91st floor of the building, at 392m above the ground, it’s now the third highest open-air observation deck in the world.
Shanghai World Financial Centre
The Shanghai World Financial Centre, is a soaring glass skyscraper with a distinctive opening at the top in Pudong District, Shanghai, China. The construction of this building began in 1997, but due to the crisis in Southeast Asia, it temporarily halted and resumed in 2003. Its final height is 492 metres and has 101 floors.
International Commerce Centre (ICC)
The ICC building, completed in 2010 in West Kowloon, is the tallest building in Hong Kong, China, and one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers at 484 metres. Original plans were for an even taller building, but zoning laws prohibited the construction of buildings higher than the surrounding mountains. The design of the skyscraper was revised (修改) and plans for a pyramidal-shaped top were abandoned.
1. What do Burj Khalifa and Taipei 101 have in common
A. They have observatory decks.
B. They are open for half a day.
C. They are famous for their unique shapes.
D. They have the same number of floors.
2. Which building is shorter than was designed to be
A. Shanghai World Financial Centre.
B. Burj Khalifa.
C. International Commerce Centre.
D. Taipei 101.
3. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE
A. There’s an outdoor round observatory square on the 92nd floor of Taipei 101.

I have observed that Colbie Caillat has a positive influence on pop culture in recent years. Colbie has taken a stand for natural beauty with the release of her hit single, “Try”. The first time I watched the “Try” music video, I felt inspired.
The video shows women of different backgrounds and body types as well as a range of ages. I find the most inspiration in the expressions on all of the women’s faces throughout the video. Each woman has a positive look on her own face as she is shown without make-up.
In today’s society, there is an unbelievable amount of pressure to “look good”. This opening line sets the mood for the video and gives viewers a chance to wonder whether society likes them. The theme of “Try” is that we young women should focus more on our personalities than our looks, contrary to what society wants us to believe.
I have shown this video to both my mother and my grandmother, since the video speaks positive to women of all ages. The inspirational words cause viewers to think deeper about inner beauty, which is quite powerful. My mother and grandmother had similar comments about the video, which inspired further conversation about their opinions of natural beauty in today’s society.
The closing words of the video are: take your make-up off. Let your hair down.Take a breath. Look into the mirror at yourself. Don’t you like you Because I like you. It is important to focus on ourselves and ask ourselves whether we are pleased with ourselves. Colbie’s efforts break the pop culture rules of make-up.Inspiration and positive self-esteem come from within. Inner beauty makes one look good instead of the outside beauty. Colbie’s efforts should be copied to increase the importance of natural beauty in the pop culture and encourage further inspiration for young women in future generations.
4. The author pays attention to Colbie Caillat because .
A. she is regarded as the best singer
B. she makes a big difference to pop culture
C. she has released a large number of songs
D. her song “Try” has been world-famous
5. What can we know about the “Try” music video
A. It shows all kinds of women with make-up.
B. It advises everyone not to dress up themselves.
C. It helps viewers find who loves them most.
D. It focuses on young women’s qualities.
6. From the last paragraph, we can infer that .
A. people shouldn’t make up
B. people should only care about themselves
C. a woman’s real beauty is from the inside
D. positive self-esteem leads to success in the future
7. What may be the best title for the text
A. A Famous Performer—Colbie Caillat
B. How the Song “Try” Came Out
C. Never Pay Attention to Your Appearance
D. The True Meaning of Beauty
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. D
【解析】

How clever can a computer be Maybe you can get the answer after reading the following passage about a newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child.
If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory. It can remember many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this season and the weather in every city across the US. He also knows every word in the dictionary. However, if you ask Smarter Child other private questions, you will get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “I’ll be older than you after further study!”, and asking where he lives, you will get, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.”
Smarter Child uses the huge information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To answer questions about spelling for example, Smarter Child goes to www.ahdictionary.com. For the weather, he visits www.. He turns to www.the- for scientists and www. for a fantastic movie.
Some scientists believe that by joining many systems of the Internet, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the combined (结合的) knowledge of, say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears could be born. However, Smarter Child has difficulty in discerning whether a behavior is right or wrong, which is obvious to any young child. If he wants to think and learn without any help from the programmers like boy-computer David in the movie Artificial Intelligence (AI), he must solve two problems.
The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are sorted in different ways. That’s why programmers need to tell Smarter Child where to look for the weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it by himself. Another problem is that while Smarter Child can deal with information more exactly and faster than any human, he needs programmers to make better systems that allow machines to solve problems of common sense, which is a huge challenge.
8. What may be unknown to Smarter Child
A. His age. B. The weather in New York.
C. A word in the dictionary. D. A player’s name of the Boston Redsox.
9. Which website can Smarter Child visit to answer the spelling questions
A. www. B. www.
C. www.the- D. www.ahdictionary.com
10. What does the underlined word “discerning” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Preventing. B. Copying. C. Inventing. D. Telling.
11. How is boy-computer David different from Smarter Child
A. He has a huge memory. B. He can think and learn independently.
C. He can make a weather forecast. D. He deals with information fast.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是篇说明文。文章介绍了一个美国新开发的、名叫“Smarter Child”的电脑程序,讲述了它强大的功能和存在的问题。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “I’ll be older than you after further study!””(一个关于问Smarter Child年龄的问题答复是:“我再学习就会比你大了!”)可知,Smarter Child可能是不知道他的具体年龄,所以无法准确回答。故选A。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“To answer questions about spelling, for example, Smarter Child goes to www.ahdictionary.com.”(例如,要回答关于拼写的问题,Smarter Child可以访问www.ahdictionary.com。)可知,要回答关于拼写的问题,Smarter Child可以访问www.ahdictionary.com。故选D。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词所在句“However, Smarter Child has difficulty in discerning whether a behavior is right or wrong, which is obvious to any young child. ”(然而,聪明的孩子很难辨别一个行为是对还是错,这对任何小孩子来说都是显而易见的。)中的“has difficulty in”和“whether a behavior is right or wrong”可推知,Smarter Child 在分辨一个人的行为对错方面是有困难的,故“discerning”意为:辨别。故选D。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“If he wants to think and learn without any help from the programmers like boy-computer David in the movie Artificial Intelligence (AI), he must solve two problems.”(如果他想在没有程序员帮助的情况下思考和学习,就像电影《人工智能》中的电脑男孩David一样,他必须解决两个问题。)可知,电脑男孩可以在没有程序员帮助的情况下独立思考和学习,而Smarter Child做不到,这是他们的不同之处。故选B。
D
I’ve never been one for Disney movies and other animated movies aimed at kids that are often in theaters now. So deciding to watch Spirited Away, I was feeling pretty unenthusiastic but its glowing reviews and Studio Ghibli’s reputation pushed me to still watch it.
Spirited Away is about a 10 year old girl named Chihiro. While on the way to her new home her parents decide to take a detour and go down an old road. After passing through a tunnel they end up in what seems to be an abandoned town. In the town, her parents find an open food stall and eat the food, saying they can pay the shop owner once they get there. But they turn into pigs! Guided by Haku, who she meets while looking around, she sets off to try and save her parents and return to her own world.
Although it is a children’s film, I found the story to be surprisingly mature and enjoyable. Near the beginning of the story, Chihiro was a bit of a spoiled kid, but she progresses a lot as a character as she meets and interacts with the residents of the spirit world. The movie does a lot to create a sense of mystery and often uses soft worldbuilding. The animation is wonderful. It all flows very well and allows for breathtaking scenes that really bring the world to life alongside your imagination. The film has its fair share of twists and turns and was very enjoyable, while I feel that we could benefit greatly from multiple rewatches, which I’d gladly do, in order to get the full experience.
This is a movie I would definitely recommend to all ages. A small note, it does show blood in a few scenes, so if you’re a parent whether or not that’s okay for your child would be up to you. All in all, I feel that despite not being a part of the intended audience, this is an excellent movie that deserves a watch no matter what type of person you are.
12. What made the writer first watch the movie
A. His always loving the style. B. The amazing plots.
C. Its breathtaking scenes. D. People’s comments on it.
13. What do we know about Chihiro
A. She travels to an old town for fun with her parents.
B. She changes into a responsible girl.
C. She stays in the spirit city forever.
D. She changes her parents into pigs.
14. How does the writer find the movie
A. Childish and imaginary. B. Wonderful but incomplete.
C. Entertaining and developed. D. Bloody but amazing.
15. What is the style of the passage
A. Review. B. Journal. C. Biography. D. Advertisement.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

Choosing a musical instrument
Many people would like to learn how to play a musical instrument, but they are put off by one big problem: what to play ____16____.
What kind of music do you like
Many instruments are multi-purpose, but some are more suited to certain types of music. Although there is some classical performance for the saxophone, for example, people associate it more with jazz, and it is not a permanent feature of many orchestras. ____17____, so consider this before you start.
Do you want to play with other people
Think about your long-term future as a musician. If you want to play with other people, what sort of instrument would be most practical If you want to play rock music, there will always be a demand for bass players or drummers, and if you fancy being part of an orchestra, the bassoon is a great bet to make sure you are always needed.
Where are you going to practise
Many people live in flats and practising the drums, for example, will drive your neighbors crazy. Electric versions of instruments like the piano, drums, guitar and even violin give you the option of playing into the night using headphones, while your housemates sleep in peace. ____18____.
How much money can you spend
____19____. A lot of instruments can be purchased in different price ranges, for example, guitars. But this doesn’t alter the fact that many, such as the piano, are always pretty expensive. If you can’t afford your chosen instrument, will you be able to borrow someone else’s or hire one
____20____
If you’re small and don’t like lifting heavy objects, you won’t want to carry around a double bass. Apart from that, use your common sense, and don’t let your physical shortcomings put you off. Who says small skinny people can’t play the tuba It’s true that some wind instruments require a lot of lung power but with the right coaching, everyone can develop the right technique.
If you are still not sure, find an experienced music teacher, who can give you some advice and push you in the right direction. If you find an instrument you love and that suits your needs, you’ll find the time spent choosing was well worth it. Good luck with making your choice!
A. This is quite a big factor
B. Are there any physical limitations
C. Here are some tips for you to follow
D. Does it matter if you are not strong enough
E. Here are a few questions to help you decide
F. Some instruments may lend themselves better than others to the music you like
G. Alternatively, you may need to consider going to a school or a community centre to practise
【答案】16. E 17. F 18. G 19. A 20. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了如何选择一件乐器。
【16题详解】
根据本文标题“Choosing a musical instrument(选择乐器)”以及前文“Many people would like to learn how to play a musical instrument, but they are put off by one big problem: what to play (许多人都想学习如何演奏一种乐器,但他们被一个大问题耽搁了:演奏什么乐器 )”可知,本文主题是介绍如何选择乐器,空处位于首段段尾,需起到引出下文的作用,所以E项“Here are a few questions to help you decide(这里有几个问题可以帮助你做出决定)”符合文意。故选E项。
【17题详解】
根据本段小标题“What kind of music do you like (你喜欢什么类型的音乐 )”可知,本段主要介绍了需要根据你喜欢的音乐类型来选择乐器,再根据后文“so consider this before you start(所以在开始之前要考虑这一点)”可知,空处句子应与本句构成因果关系,所以F项“Some instruments may lend themselves better than others to the music you like(有些乐器可能比其他乐器更适合你喜欢的音乐)”与段落主题相符,且与下文构成因果关系。故选F项。
【18题详解】
根据本段小标题“Where are you going to practise (你打算在哪里练习 )”可知,本段主要讲述了选择乐器需要考虑你能在那些地方练习,所以G项“Alternatively, you may need to consider going to a school or a community centre to practise(或者,你可能需要考虑去学校或社区中心练习)”符合文意,其中practise为同词复现。“a school or a community centre”呼应段落主旨。故选G项。
【19题详解】
分析设空可知,空处位于段首,是对本段的高度概括,再根据本段小标题“How much money can you spend (你能花多少钱 )”以及后文“A lot of instruments can be purchased in different price ranges, for example, guitars. But this doesn’t alter the fact that many, such as the piano, are always pretty expensive. If you can’t afford your chosen instrument, will you be able to borrow someone else’s or hire one (很多乐器可以在不同的价格范围内购买,例如吉他。但这并不能改变一个事实,许多东西,比如钢琴,总是相当昂贵。如果你买不起自己选择的乐器,你能借别人的或者租一个吗 )”可知,本段主要讲述了选择乐器需要考虑价格因素,且是一个大问题,所以A项“This is quite a big factor(这是一个很大的因素)”符合语境。故选A项。
【20题详解】
分析设空可知,空处是本段的小标题,根据空后问号,所以应该是个问句,应用疑问句语序,再根据本段内容“If you’re small and don’t like lifting heavy objects, you won’t want to carry around a double bass. Apart from that, use your common sense, and don’t let your physical shortcomings put you off. Who says small skinny people can’t play the tuba It’s true that some wind instruments require a lot of lung power but with the right coaching, everyone can develop the right technique.(如果你个子小,不喜欢提重物,你就不会想带着低音提琴到处走。除此之外,运用你的常识,不要让你身体上的缺点阻碍你。谁说瘦小的人不能吹大号 的确,一些管乐器需要很大的肺活量,但通过正确的指导,每个人都可以发展出正确的技术)”可知,本段主要介绍了选择乐器时,应该考虑身体原因,所以B项“Are there any physical limitations(有什么身体限制吗)”符合文意。故选B项。

Joy a ten-year-old boy who loved nature, is always ready to help others, whether animals or humans. For example, he is always keeping water in a large basin in his yard for watering the birds and other animals.
One noon, he was playing on the grass in a bushy garden after school. He enjoyed the chirping (叽喳叫) birds, colorful butterflies, and two squirrels playing on the coconut trees. It was their own free kingdom, and Joy felt like an outsider. He decided to give them space to enjoy freely.
So he found an open grass and lay down, feeling like sunbathing on a greeny beach. Under the hot sun, Joy covered the eyes with his soft palms (手掌). His mind flew and thought about his class teacher Miss Shyla’s homework task — to do a good deed every day.
Joy stretched (伸出) out his hands, fed the squirrel some crazy biscuits and played with it. He felt the tiny eyes of a squirrel upon him. And just then, Joy saw a big rat spying on him from a hole. Upon seeing the big rat, Joy rose to his feet before it silently moving and running towards the hole. Finally, he failed to find the rat and the rat hid into its hole. Joy lay down again.
As he enjoyed the greeny beach and the sight of the blue sky, he couldn’t help but thought, “What a wonderful and blessed world it is! We humans should allow the animals to live as they wished.”
Suddenly, a tiny bird fell to the ground before his eyes. The bird shook several times and then lost consciousness (知觉). Joy jumped up and tried his best to wake the bird up, but failed. He thought the bird had fainted (晕倒) because of the heat. He couldn’t bear to see the little creature suffer and decided to take care of the bird.

【答案】Joy picked up the bird and rushed back home. As soon as he entered the house, Joy placed the bird in the shade of the living room so that it could feel cool. Ten minutes passed, but the bird did not wake up. Joy became more and more worried. After asking his mother, Joy learned that the bird might have been injured. Therefore, Joy decided to turn to the vet for help. After being examined and receiving professional treatment, the bird’s condition improved.
At last, the bird came back to life and opened its eyes. Seeing the bird waking up, Joy was relieved. Unfortunately, the bird failed when attempting to fly away. Joy took the bird home, put it into a cage and took care of it carefully. A few days later, the bird finally recovered. Joy took the cage to the bushy garden, opened the cage, and released the bird. The birds flew out, chirping around Joy. Finally, it flew away freely. Recalling the good deed he had done, Joy was very happy.

Taipei 101

A she is regarded as the best singer
B. she makes a big difference to pop culture
C. she has released a large number of songs
D her song “Try” has been world-famous
5. What can we know about the “Try” music video
A. It shows all kinds of women with make-up.
B. It advises everyone not to dress up themselves.
C. It helps viewers find who loves them most.
D It focuses on young women’s qualities.
6. From the last paragraph, we can infer that .
A. people shouldn’t make up
B. people should only care about themselves
C. a woman’s real beauty is from the inside
D. positive self-esteem leads to success in the future
7 What may be the best title for the text
A. A Famous Performer—Colbie Caillat
B. How the Song “Try” Came Out
C. Never Pay Attention to Your Appearance
D. The True Meaning of Beauty

To answer questions about spelling, for example, Smarter Child goes to www.ahdictionary.com.

B. Are there any physical limitations
C. Here are some tips for you to follow
D. Does it matter if you are not strong enough
E. Here are a few questions to help you decide

Joy, a ten-year-old boy who loved nature, is always ready to help others, whether animals or humans.
