When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note — “Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery” — and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically (魔术般) appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊) . Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.
24. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer to __________.
A. show his magical power B. pay for the delivery
C. satisfy his curiosity D. please his mother
25. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house
A. He wanted to have tea there. B. He was a respectable person.
C. He was treated as a family member. D. He was fully trusted by the family.
26. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist
A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now. B. It has been driven out of the market.
C. Its service is getting poor. D. It is not allowed by law.
27. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box
A. He missed the good old days. B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.
C. He needed it for his milk bottles. D. He planted flowers in it.

Sleeping in a noisy room isn't only distracting(使人分心的), and it can also harm your health. Although researchers have known for decades that long-term loud noises can harm us, it's only recently become recognized as a widespread problem.
In a new review of previously published studies, researchers from Germany and Denmark took a look at the ways in which noises , such as an airplane passing by or jackhammer digging in the ground , can affect our hearts. Perhaps the most obvious impact of a loud sound while you are sleeping is that it can wake you up. But, even if you don't remember hearing the noise or you don't physically get out of bed, it can disrupt you in ways you may not realize.
Noise is not just causing annoyance, but it actually makes us sick, said Dr Thomas Mtinzel, a professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.“Regardless of where the sound is coming from, if it gets louder than 60 decibels(分贝),it can increase the risk of heart disease.”
When our body hears these noises, it reacts with a stress reaction. In this case, these sudden and unexpected noises cause hormones(荷尔蒙) to speed up and eventually damage the heart. Although the chance that a single noise will affect you is unlikely, it's the continuous exposure(按触)to the sound that can finally affect you.
“But our heart health isn't the only cause for concern. Long-term noise may also raise the risk of type 2 diabetes(糖尿病),depression, and anxiety disorders,”he warns. In the future, Munzel plans to examine how noises from cars, planes, and other vehicles affect the brain. But despite the amount or the depth of research he conducts, it’ll take the help of politicians to improve the effect of noise on our health.
“ Politicians have to take into account, in particular, the new findings, ” Mtinzel said, “As for aircraft noise and airports, it is important to make new laws and set new lower noise limits that protect people living close by the airport instead of the owners of the airport.
28.What do researchers from Germany and Denmark find
A. Noise does little harm to people who are asleep.
B. Noise can cause people's memory to get worse sharply.
C. Noise louder than 60 decibels may cause heart disease.
D. Noise has been a widespread concern for a long time.
29. Which word can replace the underlined word “disrupt” in Paragraph 2
A. defeat. B. harm. C. attract. D. discourage.
30.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Politicians should take action to handle noise pollution.
B. Minzel will continue other studies on brain diseases.
C. Benefits of airport owners are more important than health.
D. Attention should be paid to heart health and other diseases
31. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Who Is to Blame for Noise Pollution
C. How Minzel Carried Out His Research
B. What Should Be Done to Stop Noise
D. How Noise Pollution Harms Our Body

Imagine yourself on a lazy evening. You have just decided that you want to watch a movie on Netflix, but, as always, it is hard to choose which movie you would like to see. Perhaps it might be a good idea to let somebody else make the choice for you or to let Netflix play a random (随机的) movie so that you don't have to think about it anymore
These options might sound appealing, but is giving up on having a choice such a good idea Are there any beneficial effects of choice that should make you want to hold on to the remote control instead of giving it away to your partner or your best friend
To figure out the answer, Romero Verdugo, I, and our colleagues (2022) did some research. We constructed a task in which participants could choose between two very similar lotteries (乐透彩).The lottery they chose would be played for them, and participants would be rewarded with the outcome of the lottery. However, in some cases, the participants did not have to make the choice themselves: The computer would select which lottery would be played. In a follow-up experiment, curiosity was measured by letting participants indicate whether they were willing to wait to see the outcome of the lottery.
Intuitively (凭直觉), it should not matter at all, since the lotteries looked very similar. Still, we found that people were more curious about the outcomes of chosen lotteries than about lotteries that were chosen for them. More strikingly, people were more often willing to wait a few seconds to see the lottery outcome for chosen compared with unchosen lotteries.
So, clearly, choice boosts our curiosity. These findings might be applicable to situations in which boosting curiosity is important, such as education and the workplace, or when promoting health behavior change. And please remember: Next time you are watching Netflix, make sure you keep the remote control in your own hands so that you can choose which movie to watch tonight. This choice will likely boost your curiosity about the movie, which might, in turn, make your evening more pleasant.

A. By describing a scene. B. By presenting a theory.
C. By explaining a concept. D. By describing his own experience.

A. How people meet their curiosity.
B. Why people like buying lottery tickets.
C. Why making choices is hard for people.
D. How making choices on one's own affects people.
34. What has the research found
A. Making a choice ourselves could excite our curiosity.
B. It is easier to have others make choices for us.
C. Curious people tend to be more impatient.
D. Lotteries increase people’ s curiosity.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The further study direction.

Text 10
Good afternoon, viewers. Thanks for tuning in to your local News Channel 5 in Tulsa, for
the latest weather report around town! It’s Tuesday, April 9th, and I have some important
weather news for you today. Later this evening, we will be getting some rain, which will
increase throughout the night. (17) By morning, we will have a bad thunderstorm. So,
when you go to work tomorrow, be sure to take your umbrella and rain boots! Let’s also
look at the weather report for the week. The storm will not be passing for several days,
until Sunday. (18)In fact, on Saturday, we may have a chance of a tornado. This could be
serious, folks. Tornado activity is starting in Springfield and may move into Oklahoma
City, (19) which means we’d be next. In case of a tornado, you should probably store up
some basic supplies, like bottles of water and canned foods — just in case. (20) Thanks
again for watching, folks, and tune in again soon for your most updated weather news in
town!
