A 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the Indonesian coast sent a wall of water racing toward Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Lang was on the island of Ko Phi Phi, just south of Phuket, Thailand, shopping on Main Street with her friend Rubina Wong, when suddenly everything changed. "People started running inland. From where we were, we could not see the beach so we had no idea what was going on," she said.
Lang and Rubina started running inland in the same direction as everyone else, when she noticed water flooding into the island, but so strong and fast that she could no longer lift her feet to run. Rubina had gone down a side street. Lang never saw her alive again.

Dolly Parton was one of the six honorees to receive the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy on Thursday night at Gotham Hall in New York. She was celebrated for her extraordinary contributions that make the world a better place.
It is thought that Dolly Parton has been quietly paying for the band uniforms of many Tennessee high schools for years. She used the songwriting payment she earned from Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You to purchase a shopping center in Nashville to support the surrounding black community in Houston's honor.
Her "Imagination Library" provides children under age 5 with a free book every month. The library aims to inspire a love for reading through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Republic of Ireland. Currently, Parton sends out about 2 million free books each month. Parton has also donated many books to disaster relief. In 2021, she even raised $700,000 to help residents impacted by the terrible flooding in Middle Tennessee.
In her Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy speech, Parton said she didn't really have a strategy for her donations. "I just give from my heart. I never know what I'm going to do or why I'm going to do it. I often see a need, and if I can meet it, then I will," she said.
This year, Parton also carried out the Care More Program at her Dollywood Parks and Resorts, which gives employees a day off to volunteer at a nonprofit of their choice. Parton said, "I hope the program will let people realize that when they help somebody, they help themselves more." "That's what we should do as human beings," she said. "I've never quite understood why we have to let religion and politics and other things stand in the way of just being good human beings. I think it's important just to feel like you're doing your part and doing something good and right."
8. Why did Parton buy a shopping center
A. To give aid to others. B. To honor black leaders.
C. To pay for songwriting. D. To support her music career.
9. What is the main purpose of “Imagination Library”
A. To sell children's books.
B. To collect money for disaster relief.
C. To motivate children's interest in books.
D. To promote international financial cooperation.
10. What can we learn about Parton from paragraph 4
A. She was forced to do charity.
B. She made donations occasionally.
C. She always helped those in need.
D. She used to make well-planned donations.
11. What does Parton want to tell people through the Care More Program
A. Giving is receiving.
B. Employees come first.
C. It is important to tell right from wrong.
D. Religion stands in the way of volunteering.

As my daughter read my recent poem, she insisted that I have the AI Bot called ChatGPT compose a poem with the same title and probably the result would shock me.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has made headlines around the world. As a souped-up(增强型的) chatbot, the AI program can quickly produce answers to various questions in life, and draw up college essays, fictional stories, and even job application letters. It does this by drawing on what it has collected from a massive amount of text on the Internet, with careful guidance from human experts. Basically, with a simple registration, anyone can contact the AI and ask it questions, and also provide feedback to the developers. It is its perceptive and learning capabilities that will take your breath away.
To check out it, I set it the task. It did, in about 20 seconds. Then came the AI's version. It's interesting that it basically has comprehended my requirement, but somehow nothing impressive. At least, it feels somewhat clumsy. What it lacks, in my opinion, is any real cleverness or insight. It is, in effect, a collection of "expected" phrases dragged out one after another.
To truly transform the world in the way that is being so breathlessly promoted in the media, what is truly needed is an AI with the wisdom, judgment and passion of the human mind to take everything known and then produce an outcome which can reflect considerable progress that the human mind can make. There were hundreds of contemporary Beethoven-like composers including AI writing at the same time as the master, but only one is competent to come up with Ode to Joy. Therefore, AI, lacking original creativity, can't compose imaginative works.
AI, not subconscious, instead, completely conscious or even too conscious. Too well-informed, it is blindly, eagerly conscious of everything ever written. That is its core weakness. Feeling a little unease, I then asked ChatGPT if Lakers would win championship this year. It politely told me that there's a chance but it really couldn't predict the future, especially in sports. I shrugged(耸肩) slightly.
32. What is special about ChatGPT
A. The supply of massive statistics.
B. The astonishing learning ability.
C. The amazing speed to process information.
D. The unique answer to a certain question.
33. What does the author think of ChatGPT
A. Suspicious. B. Dismissive. C. Intolerable. D. Indifferent.
34. Why is Beethoven's Ode to Joy mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To clarify human being is better than AI Bot.
B. To demonstrate the composition requires efforts.
C. To imply human perception is of significance.
D. To prove AI is short of original imagination.
35. Which of the following is the most suitable title of the text
A. Will ChatGPT Take the Place of Most Jobs
B. What are the Drawbacks of ChatGPT
C. Is ChatGPT a Better Poet Than Me
D. What May ChatGPT Bring to Human Beings

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have loads of friends. He showed off a lot, always talking about how many friends he had at school, and how he was so friendly with everyone else.
One day his grandfather said to him, "Mario, I bet you a big bag of popcorn that you don't have as many friends as you think. I'm sure many of them are nothing more than companions, acquaintances, or partners in crime."
Mario accepted the bet without hesitation. However, he wasn't sure how he could test whether or not his schoolmates were real friends, so he asked his grandpa. The old man answered, "I have just exactly what you need. It's in the attic. Wait here a minute."
Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. "Take it. It's a very special chair. It's rather tricky to sit on because it's invisible, but if you take it to your school and you manage to sit on it, you'll activate its magic and you'll be able to tell who your real friends are."
Mario, brave and determined, took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. "Don't move. You're about to see something amazing."
And Mario attempted to sit on the chair. Having difficulty seeing it, he missed and fell straight onto his backside. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. "Wait, wait, just a slight technical problem," he said, making another attempt. But again he missed the seat, causing more surprised looks, and a few catcalls. Mario wouldn't be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground… until, suddenly, he tried again and didn't fall. This time he sat, staying in mid-air—some friends were standing behind him.

答案:
to inspire;has been studying/has studied;had visited;majoring;which;established;importance;a;from;cultural
try to do sth. 故填to inspire。
故填has been studying/has studied。
故填which。
attach great importance to为固定搭配,意为"非常重视"。故填importance。
故填a。
故填from。
Are Internet friends real friends?
Online friendships are a wonderful part of many people's lives, but as far as I'm concerned, Internet friends cannot be considered real friends.
While it may be easy to communicate with people online(it作形式主语,不定式是真正的主语) , the Internet doesn't provide the same level of personal interaction and emotional connection. Additionally, the anonymity of the Internet can result in difficulties in establishing trust, which makes it difficult to determine the true intentions of an Internet friend(非限制性定语从句) . Moreover, thou史Internet friends seem to keep you company(让步状语从句) , they can't provide you with the real support.
Therefore, I think people should make efforts to form real-life friendships rather than online friendships.
第二节
答案:
Para 1:
Looking around, Mario saw three of his best friends holding him up, so he wouldn’t fall. He finally knew how the magic chair worked and experienced the magic that his grandfather had been talking about. The three best friends couldn’t bear to see Mario fall again and came to help. Meanwhile, many others he had thought of as good friends had done nothing but standing by and wanting to see Mario fall again and again, from which they got a lot of fun. They just enjoyed making fun of Mario.
Para 2:
After the show, Mario told the three best friends about the bet and took them to see his grandfather. That evening, Mario’s grandpa treated the four children to a big bag of popcorn. They had a great time eating popcorn, talking, laughing and listening to stories until very late. From grandpa’s magic chair, Mario knew that true friends are those who care for us, not just any acquaintance who happens to be passing by. And someone who takes joy in our misfortunes is even less of a friend.
