I was driving when my phone alerted me to a new email. Filled with eager anticipation, I pulled over, turned

on my hazard lights, and opened it. My emotions quickly changed as I learned, for the sixth and final time, that
I had been denied a promotion to full professor. My institution didn’t seem to value what I brought to the table.
But when I told my family that night, my children offered a surprisingly positive response. They were excited
to see what I was going to do next, they said. They apparently knew long before I did that losing my bid for a
promotion would turn out to be the best thing that could have happened to me.
This had been the final step in a long process spanning 15 months and involving so much effort. I had
started by studying successful promotion bids and asking senior scholars for frank discussions about my
readiness. I had carefully prepared my application packet, summarizing everything I had achieved in my career.
For more than a year, I had spent hours every day trying to prove my worth to my university.
To my surprise, having a final answer brought a welcome sense of closure. As a first step toward healing,
I decided to put first my own values and follow my own internal compass. I disconnected from people in my
life who violated my values, cultivated my relationships with those who share my priorities and bring out the
best in me, and spent more time with my family. I founded a nonprofit that helps first-generation and low-
income students and young professionals advance in the workforce while serving their community. The idea
had long been a dream of mine, but I never pursued it because typical academic hiring and promotion don’t
reward such efforts. Now, such considerations were no longer my North Star.
Five months after that email from top leadership, I found myself in the car again, experiencing another
career-defining moment. I may have lost my bid for a big promotion, but in the end, it brought me to the right
place.
24. What did the author feel after he read the email
A. Anxious and annoyed. B. Embarrassed and ashamed.
C. Relieved and peaceful. D. Disappointed and sorrowful.
25. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. What contributions the writer had made. B. What preparations the writer had made.
C. How successful the career had been. D. How tiring the process had been.
26. Which of the following would the writer probably agree with
A. Success is more than a title or a rank.
B. One’s internal compass is to be developed.
C. Serving the community may heal a broken heart.
D. One’s real value first lies in his family interaction.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. Emails: my North Star
B. Full professor: a double-edged sword
C. A career setback becomes a great opportunity
D. An academic career witnesses a failed promotion
C
Like many teenagers, I was once troubled by anxiety and dissatisfaction—feelings that my parents often
第4页,共10页
{#{QQABQQQQogAoAAJAARhCAQEaCkGQkACCCKoGhFAIoAAAwAFABAA=}#}
met with puzzlement rather than sympathy. They were already in their 50s, and having grown up in postwar
Britain, they struggled to understand the sources of my dissatisfaction.
“The problem with your generation is that you always desire to be happy.” my mother once said. I was
puzzled. Surely happiness was the purpose of living, and we should spare no efforts to achieve it at every
opportunity. I simply wasn’t prepared to accept my unhappiness as something that was beyond my control.
But I have noticed a shift in thinking, and I am now coming to the conclusion that my mother’s judgement
was spot on. Over the past 10 years, numerous studies have shown that our obsession with happiness and high
personal confidence may be making us less content with our lives, and less effective at reaching our actual goals.
Indeed, we may often be happy when we stop focusing on happiness altogether.
While greater contentment is achievable, don’t expect miracle, and accept that no matter how hard you try,
feeling of frustration and unhappiness will appear from time to time. In reality, certain negative feelings can
serve a useful purpose.
When we feel sad, it’s often because we have learned something painful but important, while stress can
motivate you to make some changes to your life. The last thing you should do is blame yourselves for
occasionally feeling bad when plans don’t work out.
Eventually, you might adopt the old saying “Prepare for the worst, hope for the best and be unsurprised by
everything in between.” As my mother tried to teach me all those years ago, ease the pressure off yourself, and
you may find that contentment arrives when you’re least expecting it.
28. Which of the following best explain “spot on” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Confusing. B. Correct. C. Ridiculous. D. Controversial.
29. According to the passage, which of the following mainly leads to teenagers’ unhappiness
A. High expectations. B. Low living purposes.
C. Inadequate efforts. D. Improper preparations.
30. Which of the following statements is the author most likely to agree with
A. Stress in your life will probably ruin your happiness and life.
B. Higher personal confidence makes us more satisfied with our life.
C. You needn’t be guilty of feeling awful since you may learn a lot from it.
D. If we try hard, feelings of frustration and unhappiness will disappear from our life.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Can we benefit from negative feelings
B. Why it’s time to stop fighting for happiness
C. How can we overcome our unhappiness
D. Can we generation be happier than our parents
D
An artificial intelligence can decode words and sentences from brain activity with surprising—though still
limited—accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard. It
lists the correct answer in its top 10 possibilities up to 73 percent of the time, researchers found in a study.
第5页,共10页
{#{QQABQQQQogAoAAJAARhCAQEaCkGQkACCCKoGhFAIoAAAwAFABAA=}#}
Developed at the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of
people around the world unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures, researchers report on
August 25 at arXiv.org.
Most existing technologies to help such patients communicate require risky brain surgeries to implant
electrodes. This new approach “could provide a practical path to help patients without the use of invasive
methods,” says neuroscientist Jean-Rémi King, a Meta AI researcher in Paris.
King and his colleagues trained a computational tool to detect words and sentences on 56,000 hours of
speech recordings from 53 languages. The tool, also known as a language model, learned how to recognize
specific features of language. With the help of a computational method, the team tried to decode what
participants had heard using just three seconds of brain activity data from each person. The team instructed the
AI to match the speech sounds from the story recordings to patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as
corresponding to what people were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been
hearing during that short time, given more than 1,000 possibilities. The correct answer was in the AI’s top 10
guesses up to 73 percent of the time, the researchers found.
The new study is “decoding of speech perception, not production,” King notes. Though speech production
is the ultimate goal, for now, “we’re quite a long way away.”
32. What is the main idea of paragraph 1
A. The principle of human brain activity.
B. The limitation of human brain activity.
C. The definition of the artificial intelligence.
D. The new function of the artificial intelligence.
33. Whom might the AI be beneficial to
A. People unable to hear. B. People who can’t move around.
C. People who are unconscious. D. People unable to communicate normally.
34. What is the purpose of paragraph 4
A. To analyze the features of the study. B. To state the significance of the study.
C. To introduce the process of the study. D. To present the achievement of the study.
35. What can we infer about the AI from the passage
A. It performs well in the speech production.
B. Its accuracy is far from the researchers’ satisfaction.
C. It will help patients avoid dangerous brain surgeries.
D. Its language learning ability is beyond expectation.

My, what a big beak you have!
For humans, adapting to climate change will mostly be a matter of technology. More air conditioning,
better-designed houses and bigger flood defenses may help to make the effects of a warmer world less harmful.
第6页,共10页
{#{QQABQQQQogAoAAJAARhCAQEaCkGQkACCCKoGhFAIoAAAwAFABAA=}#}
36 In a paper published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution, a team led by Sara Ryding, a PhD candidate at
Deakin University, shows that is already happening. Climate change is already altering the bodies of many
animal species, giving them bigger beaks (喙), legs and ears.
In some species of Australian parrot, for instance, beak size has increased by between 4% and 10% since
1871. Another study, this time in North American dark-eyed juncos, another bird, found the same pattern.
37
All that is perfectly consistent with evolutionary theory. “Allen’s rule”, named for Joel Asaph Allen, who
suggested it in 1877, holds that warm-blooded animals in hot places tend to have larger body parts than those
in temperate (温带的) regions. 38 Being richly filled with blood vessels, and not covered by feathers,
beaks make an ideal place for birds to get rid of heat. Fennec foxes, meanwhile, which are native to the Sahara
Desert, have strikingly large ears, especially compared with their Arctic cousins.
Ms. Ryding is not the first researcher to take that approach. But it is hard, when dealing with individual
species, to prove that climate change was the cause of an anatomical (解剖学的) changes. All sorts of other
factors, from changes in prey to the evolving reproductive preferences of males or females, might have been
driving the changes. 39 The team combined data from different species in different places. Since they
have little in common apart from living on a warming planet, climate change is the most reasonable explanation.
40 That may change as warming accelerates. Since any evolutionary adaptation comes with trade-
offs (妥协), it is unclear how far the process might go. Bigger beaks might make feeding harder, for instance.
Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost more energy to grow.
A.However, looking at the bigger picture makes the pattern clearer.
B.For now, at least, the increase is small, never much more than 10%.
C.Animals will have to rely on changing their bodies or their behaviors.
D.It seems that the future world is going to be hotter than humans are used to.
E.Therefore, the negative effects of a warmer world are visible in these animals’ bodies.
F.Such adaptations boost an animal’s surface area relative to its body, helping it to release extra heat.
G.Similar trends are seen in mammals, with species of mice and bats evolving bigger ears, legs and wings.

plants or walking dogs — I’m more of a cat person.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town
had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each
other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She
knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and
medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in
bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy — his name
was Bernard — had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his
mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”

After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn
money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea!
I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I’ll
tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us Well, we can make

W: Oh, I thought it would have been the other way around.
M: Me too. Of course, Fitbit was very upset by the study and said it wasn’t true.

【原文】Duolingo is a free language-learning website and app. It offers ad-free courses for those who want to
learn a new language. As of 2016, Duolingo has fifty-nine different language courses for twenty-three
languages. Over 120 million people are registered with the program. Duolingo was created in 2011 by
Professor Luis von Ahn and his graduate student Severin Hacker, who was born in Switzerland. Prof. Luis von
Ahn was born in Guatemala, and he was upset by how expensive it was for people in his town to learn English.
He wanted to create a program that offered free education to anyone in the world. Because most of the services
are available free of charge, Duolingo originally used a special business model to make money. Members of the
public were able to translate content and vote on correct translations. The content came from large websites
such as BuzzFeed and CNN.com, which paid Duolingo to translate their webpages. Many private investors
have given money to the company, including actor Ashton Kutcher’s firm. Duolingo has also been used in
public schools in Costa Rica and Guatemala.
