As we get older, do our brains get slower It has been thought for a long time that our brain starts to get less active from the age of 20. However, recently some scientists in Germany doubted that. They did a research on the study of human brains.
The head researcher Dr. Mischa von Krause, of Heidelberg University, offered hope to older people who worry about increasing forgetfulness or reduced brain power. He said cognitive (认知的) skills were still powerful at the age of 60 and do not diminish before then. He wrote in the report—our finding is encouraging, as our results show that average levels in mental processing speed (大脑运行速度) still grow fast after 20 and do not go down until relatively late in age.
The study got the results from over 1.1 million people, aged between 10 and 80 years old. The results show that our mental processing speed remains growing until the age of 60, but does start to go down after 70. The researchers said people’s mental processing speed actually still increases in their 20s and remains high until 60.
Dr. von Krause said, “Until older ages, the speed of information processing in the task we studied almost has no difference.” He added that older people take longer time to make decisions, but this was because they become more careful to think more about what is important as they get older. The study could give more hope on treating some illnesses such as Alzheimer’s.
