According to B. C. Forbes, many widely known winners struggled with difficulties and failures before they achieved success, and the reason why they ultimately achieved is that they never lost their courage when they suffered setbacks.
In ancient times, a king had a big rock placed on a roadway, and he hid himself to see if anyone would remove the huge rock.
Some of the wealthy noblemen and businessmen came by and simply walked around it. Many blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but no one did anything to move the stone out of the way.
Then a farmer came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the rock he laid down his load and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he succeeded.
After the farmer picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a reward lying on the road where the rock had been. It contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating the gold was for the person who removed the stone from the roadway.
The farmer learned what many of us struggle to understand: Hidden behind every obstacle is an opportunity, yet many are unwilling to explore it.
Obstacles are present in everyday life. It can be a barrier that sets you back or stops your progress. Or you are about to carry out your best plan, but then a block that derails it appears. They are all discouraging and cause a loss of time and resources.
Beyond the frustration, what role do obstacles serve Keep in mind that within the experience there could be a greater lesson contained. Perhaps you need it to master a skill or gain valuable knowledge before continuing your plans.

South Africa’s Natalie Du Toit reached her personal goal of participating in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, carving her place in history as the third amputee (截肢者) to qualify for the Olympics. This talented swimmer finished in 16th place in the woman’s 10-kilometre open water race, which took competitors about two hours to complete.
Swimming at an Olympic Games event has always been a goal for Natalie. She narrowly missed qualifying for the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and was determined to qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics, but in 2001, due to a traffic accident, Natalie had her left leg terribly injured and amputated at the knee. Many may have seen this as the end of her Olympic dreams, but three months after losing her leg, this strong-minded young woman was back in the pool doing what she loved best—swimming.
Natalie admitted that it has been a long road which has taken an incredible amount of determination and hard work. She was rightfully proud of her achievement and felt that she deserved her place at the Olympics, which had nothing to do with whether she is disabled or not.
It was the first year that the 10-kilometr e open water marathon had been included in the Olympic Games and Natalie chose to train with this race as her goal. She felt that she was more suited to this long-distance open water race because there is less emphasis on the start and there are no rolling turns to deal with, both of which may have put her at a disadvantage. The open water event may have levelled the playing field a little for Natalie, but she was nevertheless up against some intense competition and gave an impressive performance.
Natalie was thrilled to have had the opportunity to compete in an able-bodied race at the Beijing Olympics but admitted that having set a personal goal to place in the top five, she was a little disappointed in her performance which saw her finish 1 minute 22.2 seconds behind Russian gold medalist, Larisa Ilchenko.
Although in demand as a motivational speaker, Natalie does not consider herself a campaigner for athletes with physical disabilities. She has her personal dreams and perseveres in achieving her personal goals—and she encourages and inspires others to do the same.
8. Which is true about Natalie’s achievement
A. She placed 16th in a swimming event at the Beijing Olympics.
B. She spent two hours completing the 10-kilometre open water race.
C. She took part in both the Sydney Olympics and the Athens Olympics.
D. She was the third disabled athlete to qualify for an Olympic swimming event.
9. What does the underlined sentence mean in the third paragraph
A. Natalie felt delighted to qualify for the Olympics as a disabled swimmer.
B. Natalie’s disability was an important reason why she could qualify for the Olympics.
C. Natalie thought it was more difficult for a disabled athlete to attend the Olympics.
D. Natalie earned her place at the Olympics because she persevered in working for it.
10. What was Natalie’s purpose for choosing the open water marathon in the 2008 Beijing Olympics
A. It was a good way for her to improve skills.
B. It was less likely to put her at a disadvantage.
C. It took less effort for her to prepare for the event.
D. It was the first time the event was included in the Olympics.
11. What is the main idea of this passage
A. How Natalie got through the pain of losing her leg.
B. How Natalie’s story has motivated disabled people.
C. How Natalie has pursued her personal goals despite her disability
D. How disabled athletes can take part in able-bodied Olympic events.
D
Louis Wain’s Cute Cats
Louis Wain was one of the most popular illustrators (插画师) in the history of England. Born in 1860, Wain was well-known for his anthropomorphic (拟人化的) pictures of cats and his work helped to upraise the profile and popularity of our feline (猫科的) friends to extraordinary heights. Before Wain, cats in England were often thought of without respect but his work humanised them and helped to show them as something to be liked, admired and even loved. “He made the cat his own,” H. G. Wells once remarked. “He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world.”
In his early years, Wain aimed at becoming a press artist. He specialised in drawing animals and country scenes and had work published in several journals including the popular Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. It wasn’t until 1884, when Wain was twenty-four, that he sold his first drawing of a cat to The Illustrated London News. Two years after this he got his first real taste of success when he was appointed to illustrate a children’s book. His illustrations seem a lot more traditional when compared to his later work. Yet even in these early examples, we can see signs of his ability to give a cat a personality and a playful nature.
Despite the happiness seen throughout his work, the tale of Wain’s interest in cats is sadly a heartbreaking one. In 1883, Wain married Emily Richardson. Not long after the couple married, Emily became unwell. Over the course of her illness, Wain drew their cat as a way to keep her spirits up. There must have been even more reason for joy when a few months later Wain was appointed again by The Illustrated London News to draw more illustrations based on their cat. His work, A Kitten’s Christmas Party was hugely popular and a great success. It set Wain on the road to artistic greatness and wealth but sadly he was unable to enjoy this achievement as a few months later Emily passed away.
The loss of his wife had a huge impact on Wain and he became increasingly more inward-looking. As his success went from strength to strength, he continued to struggle with anxiety and depression, and despite his professional accomplishments, his personal life was never quite the same again.
12. What did people in England think of cats in early times
A. They thought cats were respectful. B. They saw cats as their great friends.
C. They thought cats were like humans. D. They regarded cats as negative creatures.
13. What can we learn about Wain’s early life
A. He created persons like cats.
B. He achieved his first success at the age of 26.
C. He had always dreamt of being a cat illustrator.
D. He drew animals and country scenes for The Illustrated London News.
14. Which of the following is true about Emily
A. She made Wain earn a lot of money.
B. Her death changed Wain’s mental state.
C. She married Wain because she liked his illustrations.
D. She became unwell after A Kitten’s Christmas Party was released.

A fashionable area for shopping is Kensington High Street. One of its department stores even has a roof garden — good for relaxing between purchases. There’s also an organic food superstore.
Borough Market
One of the oldest and best for food is probably Borough Market on the south bank of the Thames. Get off the underground at London Bridge and wander among fresh fish stands, bakeries, and fruit and vegetable sellers. You can also buy special food to take away, like cheeses, pork pies, mustard and chutney.
More places for bargains
Portobello Road on a Saturday is your best choice for jewelry or collector’s items. It’s a short walk from the subway station at Notting Hill Gate and you never know what you will find. For clothes, Camden Market is the place. It gets a little crowded at weekends, though. Convent Garden offers great experience for the simple pleasure of looking at jewelry and gifts.

Upon approaching the rock, he laid down his load and tried to move the stone to the side of the road.

14. Which of the following is true about Emily
