Everyone tries their best in life, and sometimes a few kind words of encouragement can help people realize that their efforts are not in vain (徒劳). I remember a time when I was in fifth grade, and I was a very shy girl.
There was a drawing competition at my school that day. As everyone started to use their creative ideas to draw, I was only trying to think of something creative that could express my thoughts and emotions. Lost in my own world, I was brought back to reality when my art teacher called my name from behind. She came to me and encouraged me, saying, “Don’t overthink it, just put whatever comes to your mind on the canvas (画布). Do your best, and you will do well.”
Taking her words of wisdom to heart, I started my painting. Time flew by, and soon the bell rang, signaling the end of the time limit. We all turned in our canvases for inspection (检查). The next day, the winners of the competition were announced in front of the whole school. To my surprise, I heard my name being called second prize. It was a bolt from the blue for me, as I had never dared to dream of winning any prize.
Later on, I expressed my gratitude to my art teacher for her words of encouragement and for believing in me. That day, I became aware of my talent and started painting more whenever I had free time. Sometimes, I think that if it weren’t for her words of encouragement, I may have never discovered the talent I have.

Everybody hates rats. But in the areas where there are many earthquakes, rats will soon be man’s friends.
What happens after an earthquake We send in rescue (营救) dogs. Why Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornel University, New York says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).

“Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity, ” said the American talk show host Oprah Winfrey. I’ve never watched her show, but when a self-made billionaire gives life advice it’s probably worth listening to.
Her point is that blind luck is very rare. You may have to be lucky to find a good job these days but that does not mean you should sit at home waiting for the opportunity to come to you. If you’re a Chinese, you may already be familiar with the tale of a farmer waiting by a tree stump for a rabbit to run out and break its neck.
A book by the UK psychologist Richard Wiseman, called The Luck Factor, argues we can all make ourselves luckier. It’s most about going to a temple to burn some incense in hopes that the gods will give you good fortune, but practical advice you can follow each day.
Wiseman conducted an experiment as part of his studies. First he divided volunteers into two groups: those who said they were lucky in life and those who said they were not. He gave everyone a newspaper and asked them to look through it to count how many photographs it had inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs while the lucky people took just seconds. Why On the second page of the newspaper, a command, “Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper,” was written in big letters. The unlucky people mostly did not spot the message.
It’s easy to compare this situation to a young person looking for jobs in a local paper. They might search so hard for one type of position that they miss an even better opportunity. People who are “lucky”, in fact, keep an open mind and don’t go through the same routine every day.
In a word, try to turn bad luck into good. Even if you do fall down and break a leg, the time spent at home can be used wisely to study English.
51、Which of the followings most agrees with the writer’s point
A. Success is for those who are prepared. B. Rome was not built in a day.
C. All is not gold that shines. D. A good heart defeats ill fortune.
52、What do you know about Oprah Winfrey
A. She became famous through her family background.
B. She was very lucky and seldom suffered difficulties in her life.
C. She is a British talk show host.
D. She became successful by her own effort.
53、The writer quoted the Chinese tale of a farmer in order to show ________.
A. man can defeat mature
B. luck is your own hand
C. bad luck can turn into good
D. never waiting for the chance to come
54、From the experiment Wiseman drew the conclusion that ________
A. lucky people are quick-minded B. unlucky people are slow to read
C. lucky people often have an open mind D. unlucky people are more creative
55、The underlined word “spot” is the closest in meaning to “________”.
A. Discover B. Mark C. Make D. Receive
My job consists of planning, producing operating scientific instruments in-flight, and I am grateful for having worked on missions(太空飞行任务) on Saturn, the Moon, and our own planet Earth.
When I was a high-schooler, I was unsure of what college I wanted to attend, or what major I wanted to choose. After receiving an email from a college called Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) I decided to apply to a summer program they were offering with the encouragement of my mom. After taking part in that program, I knew that MIT was the right university for me. The enthusiastic students and endless opportunities developed a feeling of belonging in me that led me to apply and eventually get accepted.
The most exciting and fulfilling(令人满足的) part of being an engineer is that I am able to work on projects that benefit humans. What they may not imagine is the great body of work being done to study our own home -Earth. I am thankful to have a career that to commit myself to that allows me responsibility. The most exciting part of my career has been seeing the end of the Cassini mission to Saturn. Some of the people on the team had been working on the mission for longer than I had been alive, but they still treated me as one of their own. I was given the opportunity to operate the cameras that would catch breathtaking(激动人心的) images of the planet. And when the Cassini spacecraft had run out of fuel, I quickly learned that it was not just the end of the mission, but the end of a team. The night we watched with bittersweet longing as its signal faded to nothing is something that I will always keep in my memories. And while Cassini will be remembered for its historic contributions, what I will remember it for is the team it brought together.
My friends often ask why a girl could achieve all these. I always grew up as a big fan of fiction. I read the Harry Potter books and loved anything fantasy. I realized that the common theme of hero stories is that the hero must always make a choice to start their adventure. If you don’t pick up the sword(剑)in your own story because you are afraid of what may happen next, you risk not having a story at all.

61、答案:
As we all know, the number of wild animals is dramatically decreasing, because the environment that they are living in has changed greatly. For example, with the development of cities their living areas have become narrower and narrower. Many wild animals, confronted with food crisis, are facing the danger of extinction. At the same time, people capture and kill the endangered species just for getting their fur, skin, teeth and meat. As a result, the relevant departments and people must come up with some plans and put them into practice. To start with, the killing of rare species should be prohibited. Besides those who capture wild animals intentionally should be severely punished. Last but not least, more and more national parks should be set up as natural reserves for the conservation of wild animals. Only if we human beings take some strong measures can wild animals be preserved.
