I am drawn to the peace and pure beauty of primitive nature. Being in it heightens my perceptions and narrows my focus. As I concentrate on the surroundings, an inner stillness fills me and helps me capture a sense of place.
This was the case when I packed my camera equipment and adventured into some of Europe’s old-growth forests to highlight these unique environments that have remained complete for centuries, despite frequent threats of human disturbance.
The visits were often challenging because of unfavorable weather conditions and the distances I had to cover while going multiple times to the most photogenic (适于摄影的) locations. But the joy of the experience always won. Hiking off the trail through the foggy laurel forests of Madeira, I was enveloped by trees that may have been up to 800 years old and whose trunks provided me with shelter when clouds released a sudden downpour. It felt like entering a holy (神圣的) space.
Wandering through the intact Scots pine forests of northern Sweden and the mountain tree lines of southern Norway rewarded me with the sense of freedom I always get in the Scandinavian wilderness. The beech trees that stand on the steep slopes of Italy have left me in awe of the power of an uncut forest. I feel honored that I have been allowed to explore and photograph these wonderlands.
Except Russia, only about 2 percent of the forest areas in Europe are primary, or have never been cleared, reflecting an impressive richness of life that once filled vast wooded ecosystems. Most of the areas are now protected, but as the human population continues to grow—with destructive impacts on the planet and its living creatures—the future of these forests is far from certain. I, for one, hope that they will still be standing for many centuries more.
4. What does the author find so appealing about primitive nature
A. The sense of peace and pure beauty it provides. B. The unique ecosystems it preserves
C. The opportunities for photography it offers. D. The challenges to adventures it presents.
5. Why did the author adventure into some of Europe’s old-growth forests
A. To escape the troubles of life.
B. To enrich his personal experiences.
C. To explore the treasures hidden in the forest.
D. To photograph the unique forests preserved for centuries.
6. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The author’s sufferings in the forest. B. The way to protect the primitive forest.
C. The author’s wonderful experience in the foggy forests. D. Climate conditions and photogenic locations of forests.
7 What is the author’s perspective on the future of these old-growth forests in Europe
A. Optimistic. B. Uncertain. C. Indifferent. D. Pessimistic.
C
Super images from NASA show the Moon’s south pole in incredible detail. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) used a ‘ShadowCam’ (影子相机) to try and take high-resolution pictures. Pictures showed “features and terrain (地形) details that are not visible to LROC”.
Experts at the space organization were interested in the area around the Shackleton Crater because of suspected ice deposits (沉积). Scientists believe layers of the ice deposits have existed on the Moon for millions or billions of years. The ice deposits could serve as an important resource for exploration because they are composed of hydrogen and oxygen. Those gases can be used for rocket fuel or life support systems. Areas like the Shackleton Crater are at an angle so parts of it are never exposed to sunlight. If a person were at the moon’s south pole, the Sun would never rise or set and stay low on the horizon. The South Pole also provides near constant communication with Earth.
It comes as a NASA spacecraft will fly by Earth on Sunday. It’s expected to drop off at least a cupful of rubble (碎石) it grabbed from the asteroid (小行星) Bennu. The sample capsule will land into Utah desert. Its mother ship, the Osiris-Rex spacecraft, quickly leaves to encounter another asteroid. Sunday’s landing marks the end of a 4 billion-mile journey that included reaching the carbon-rich asteroid Bennu. It successfully collected samples, and encountered challenges such as a jammed lid that led to some spillage in space.
It is hoped that findings from the study will help scientists figure out how to deflect (使偏转) Bennu. Bennu is set to dangerously strike Earth with the force of 24 atom bombs on September 24, 2182. The space rock, which is as big as Empire State Building, swings close to our planet every six years. However, the agency says there is a 1 in 2,700 chance it could strike Earth, with disastrous results.
8. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To explain the meaning of LROC. B. To lead to the main topic.
C. To describe the Moon’s south pole. D. To present the importance of ‘ShadowCam’.
9. What do we know from paragraph 2
A. Ice deposits can be used for exploration.
B. Ice deposits are found in the area around the Shackleton Crater.
C. Sunlight cannot reach the Shackleton Crater.
D. The Shackleton Crater is a popular tourist destination.
10. What is the expected result of the NASA spacecraft that will fly by Earth on Sunday
A. It will conduct new experiments in space.
B It will collect more ice deposits from the asteroid Bennu.
C. It will bring back a cup of rubble from the asteroid Bennu.
D It will test new technology for deep space exploration.
11 What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The asteroid Bennu is rich in carbon.
B. Scientists can make the asteroid Bennu change its direction.
C. There’s a strong possibility of Bennu striking Earth in the future.
D. The asteroid samples brought back by NASA are likely to have scientific research value.
D
Do you ever feel like your brain isn’t meant for modern times, like it’s a relic (遗物) of a bygone era After all, we wolf down energy-packed fatty foods as if our next meal isn’t a sure thing, even though most of us have access to many more calories than we need. We are afraid of snakes and spiders, even though we rarely encounter them now. And we’re afraid of the dark even in our own homes.
The human brain evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to deal with immediate risks like hunger and danger, but the vast majority of humans today are neither starving nor in danger of being hunted by a predator or bitten by a poisonous creature. Instead, the risks we face now are obesity, climate change and pollution. The threat and thinking systems in our brain appear to be ill-suited to handle them.
“Our brain is hardwired, and the chemistry of the brain guarantees that we feel first and think second,” said David Ropeik, an expert in risk perception (感知). “That worked pretty well when the risks were lions, tigers and bears. It’s not as good now when we need to reason and use the facts more with the complicated risks we face in a modern age.”
Is there anything we can do to overcome that “If the brain jumps to conclusions out of emotion first, just assume that your first decision might not be the best one,” Ropeik said. “Get more information. Take more time to think.”
Dan Ariely from Duke University suggests another strategy. “When you think about your own life, you’re trapped within your own perspective. You’re trapped within your own emotions and feelings and so on,” said Ariely. “But if you can think about a problem with a third-person viewpoint, you’ll likely reach a more rational decision.”
You can also outsource your brain’s thought process to friends, family or even Internet forums. Simply asking others for advice is a great way to tackle problems more rationally, Ariely said. For him, seeking wisdom from a collective fits well with an idea that Paul Bloom, a professor from the University of Toronto, supports: The individual may be irrational, but as a whole, humanity can be rational.
12. What risk does the human brain appear to be ill-suited to handle
A. Hunger. B. Climate change. C. Thirst. D. Animal attack.
13. What can we conclude from David Ropeik’s words
A. Our brains make decisions based on logic. B. Too much information confuses our brain.
C. The human brain is somewhat outdated. D. Our brains are well-suited to modern society.
14. What does the underlined word “rational” in paragraph 5 mean
A. reasonable B. unacceptable C. subjective D. obvious
15. Why does the author write the text
A. To discuss how to avoid risks. B. To introduce a healthier lifestyle.
C. To list some problems of our brain. D. To offer solutions to the challenges our brain faces.

Having nothing to do, or doing the same task again and again, can certainly be boring. And if you always feel too much boredom, it can even affect your mental health. But does being bored have to be boring
A lack of stimulation (刺激) can lead to boredom—this is when we start to yawn and our mind wanders. ___16___ But it’s at work where some experts think being chronically (长期地) bored can have damaging consequences.
___17___ And it is the opposite of “burnout”. Writing for BBC Worklife, Bryan Lufkin says, “This happens when we are bored by our work to the point that we feel it is totally meaningless. ___18___” It can be caused by working in a disappointing environment or feeling under-challenged. Studies show that terrible feelings from boreout can affect workers outside the office and lead to physical illness from insomnia (失眠) to headaches. But Bryan adds that identifying the problem is important for tackling it.
When it becomes extremely boring, some people joke about “dying of boredom”. According to Luis Villazon, writing for the Science Focus website, boredom is just a state of mind which won’t kill you, though it can harm the immune system in some people. He says, “The greatest risk from boredom comes from the things you do to struggle with it. ___19___”
However, some experts say boredom is a natural thing. ___20___ If we see it as an opportunity, it could encourage our creativity. And if our boredom is at work, it could force us to work more effectively.

D. He says “boreout” can be turned into “burnout”.

I came outside after basketball practice with some fellows. The sun was setting, and the cool autumn evening felt good compared to the hot gym. I walked to where my mom’s car always parked, but it wasn’t there. That was a little strange. She never parked anywhere else, and she was never late. I went back and sat down on the roadside.
One by one, the fellows who had come outside with me picked up their gym bags and backpacks, greeted their parents, got into different cars and waved goodbye to me.
I watched them drive off. Where was my mom And why didn’t she call I’d give her five more minutes, and then I was going to call her.
Five minutes went by and another six vehicles left. But there was still no Mom Car.
I got up and paced up and down at the parking lot as I finished punching in Mom’s number and waited. It went straight to voicemail.
A set of headlights pulled into the parking lot. A girl walked toward the car. It was Rachel who just finished her volleyball training.
Suddenly she stopped and was looking at me. “Dad, Lester is still here.”
Mr. McPhearson paused with his hand on the car door. “Rachel, we’re already late.”
“I don’t care. We can’t leave him here alone, Dad.”
Then I saw their feet stop in front of me. “Will you have a ride home ” Mr. McPhearson asked.
I nodded. “My mom’s supposed to be here.”
“Do you mind if we sit down and wait with you ” Then he sat down next to me, and Rachel sat down next to him.
“Rachel, will you introduce me to your classmate ”
“Dad, this is Lester Monroe. He’s in my language arts class. And he’s a great basketball player!”
“Yes, sir,” I said. “That’s why I’m here. We just had practice.”
“I see.” Her dad nodded, “I haven’t seen any basketball games. Maybe I’ll come and watch you play.”

It will be on general release from 5 May.
The Little Mermaid
Another live-action-and-CGI remake of a classic Disney cartoon. But this one is more distinctive than most, because a black actress, Halle Bailey, is playing the title character, who was white in the 1989 cartoon. Besides, the film’s director, Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns), argues that his version of The Little Mermaid is progressive (前卫性的) in other ways, too. He told Nick Romano at EW, she and Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King, “really teach the world about prejudice and about breaking down barriers and walls between these two worlds.” It will be on general release from 4 May.
Fast X
It’s the tenth film in the unstoppable petrolhead series. The new additions this time are Jason Momoa as the vengeful son of a drug lord killed in Fast Five (2011); Rita Moreno as the grandmother of Dom (Vin Diesel) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) ; and Brie Larson as their contact in the secret service.
7. What is the author’s perspective on the future of these old-growth forests in Europe
A. Optimistic. B. Uncertain. C. Indifferent. D. Pessimistic.
A 5. D 6. C 7. B

B. It will collect more ice deposits from the asteroid Bennu.
C. It will bring back a cup of rubble from the asteroid Bennu.
D. It will test new technology for deep space exploration.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The asteroid Bennu is rich in carbon.
B. Scientists can make the asteroid Bennu change its direction.
C. There’s a strong possibility of Bennu striking Earth in the future.
D. The asteroid samples brought back by NASA are likely to have scientific research value.

The human brain evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to deal with immediate risks, like hunger and danger, but the vast majority of humans today are neither starving nor in danger of being hunted by a predator or bitten by a poisonous creature.
B 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中的“Instead, the risks we face now are obesity, climate change and pollution. The threat and thinking systems in our brain appear to be ill-suited to handle them. (相反,我们现在面临的风险是肥胖、气候变化和污染。我们大脑中的威胁和思维系统似乎不适合处理它们。)”可知,大脑不适合处理的事是肥胖、气候变化和污染。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“‘Our brain is hardwired, and the chemistry of the brain guarantees that we feel first and think second,’ said David Ropeik, an expert in risk perception (感知). ‘That worked pretty well when the risks were lions, tigers and bears. It’s not as good now when we need to reason and use the facts more with the complicated risks we face in a modern age.’
根据画线词所在句中的“you can think about a problem with a third-person viewpoint”可知,以第三视觉去思考问题可以排除个人的主观偏见,得出更加客观、合理的结论,所以“you’ll likely reach a more rational decision”表达的是“你很可能得到一个更加合理的决定”,rational 意为“合理的,理性的”,与reasonable意思最接近。故选A。

Having nothing to do, or doing the same task again and again, can certainly be boring. And if you always feel too much boredom, it can even affect your mental health. But does being bored have to be boring
A lack of stimulation (刺激) can lead to boredom—this is when we start to yawn and our mind wanders ___16___ But it’s at work where some experts think being chronically (长期地) bored can have damaging consequences.
A. It can happen at home or at school.
B. Boredom is very harmful to our health.
C. This situation has been termed “boreout”.
D. He says “boreout” can be turned into “burnout”.

根据空后的“with more than 150 countries and more than 30 international organizations”可知,文件不止一个,且空前没有表示数量的限定词修饰,所以这里应用名词复数。
故填a。
By the end of August 2023可知,by the end of+过去时间,这里表示“过去的过去”,应用过去完成时。
5.2%。be expected to do sth. 故填are expected。
increase sth. by... 故填by。
根据空后的“by e-commerce and mobile payments”可知,Digital economic cooperation和represent之间是动宾关系,应用过去分词作后置定语。故填represented。

Just give me a few more minutes.” She sounded apologetic but also a little frantic. “Okay, Mom,” I said. “Rachel and his father are with me. I’ll wait for you here.” I ended the call and looked at Mr. McPhearson and Rachel. “My mom is on her way now. She’ll be here soon.” “That’s good to hear. We are going to wait with you.” Rachel insisted.
Around twenty minutes later, my mom’s car came into our sight. She parked next to Mr. McPhearson’s car and got out. “I’m so sorry I was late, Lester.” she said. She hugged me and then introduced herself to Mr. McPhearson and Rachel. “Thank you for keeping him company,” she said. Mr. McPhearson smiled and said, “If Rachel were in the same situation, I think you would do exactly the same thing as I do.” Then we all smiled.
